I recently had some work done on the transmission on my trike to repair the reverse in the transmission, within 4-5 weeks of very little driving the trike completely stopped and would not move...engine would run but no movement. Come to find out the variator on the engine crank shaft had self destructed wiping out the splines on the both the variator hub and the engine crank shaft. I talked to the shop that worked on the transmission, the told me that they did not take the variator apart to work on the transmission. My question is, If you need to work on the transmission, can you remove the clutch assembly without damaging the belt or anything else and not take the variator assembly apart?

What was happening with the reverse and or forward? Was it jumping or shuddering starting to move it? Many had problems because they would need to adjust them and the adjustment is only very little. To much one way it would not go forward or to much the other way it would not go in Reverse. Also Not enough in one way would make it JUMP and or shudder because the gears would not mesh all the way. So the Variator Nut came loose. TAKE PICTURES of the CRANKSHAFT SPLINE and show them to me those are important. The Variator Fan they are Cheap and you can replace that easly. Since the Crankshaft is harden steel usually only the Variator teeth get rounded off and you can just get a new Variator fan. But need to see the Splines on the shaft. But even then there is a way TO NOT REQUIRE a new Crank. Since the Variator Fan only uses just a bit of the Splines on the Crank you can cut down the BOSS to get by the bad Splines if they do not hold and you will only need TWO WASHERs instead of one behind the Nut. But getting back to your question: It is a toss up, to work on the Reverse IT CAN be done from the Sprocket side, that whole half back there comes off. So yes they would not have to take the Clutch off to get at those gears. But you can probably tell, look at the Gasket Behind the Clutch that covers the drive gears, there are about 7 bolts that hold the plate and Clutch shaft on. Here is where I am talking about. Alleyoop Check the GASKET around the 7 bolts if it looks new or new SILICONE they took it off. Gear Oil goes in there so it has to seal. Now here is on the other side of the CVT where the Reverse and forward mechanism are:
