Hello everyone, I just have a quick question about my scooter. I bought a 2012 TaoTao Scooter last September (used) and drove it around until December and everything was fine (except I had to crank it up and let it warm up before I could ride it or it would shut off, which I assumed was normal). It currently has 938 km on it.
I've been very good about cranking it up every week or so and letting it run so that the gas wouldn't sit and get stale in it, but it's just been to chilly to ride.
I got it out today to ride around and I started it up. After letting it sit for about 10 minutes, I got on it and gave it gas. As I turned the gas, it shut off. I started it back up and let it run a little longer, got on it, gave it gas and went about 20 feet and it shut off on me again.
I feel like it's probably the carburetor, but I'm not 100% sure and even if it is, I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any help or recommendations would be great!
Thanks! CG

Try adjusting the Fuel Ratio Mixture, when the temps drop like they have the motor needs a lot more fuel. BUT I WILL BET your FUEL RATIO MIXTURE SCREW is PLUGGED since it is 2012. What they do is set them REALLY LEAN for EMSSIONS and they will not run in our ever changing climate and NOW ESPECIALLY since it is COLD. So you have TWO choices DRILL out the PLUG to get to the FUel Ratio Screw or Buy a Aftermarket carb which run around $30.00 bucks that have the Fuel Ratio Screw available. Take a look at this picture and NOTICE the FUEL RATIO SCREW and look at yours in the same place. If it has a SLOT for a screwdriver you can adjust your mixture if not I mentioned the two choices you have LET ME KNOW if yours is PLUGGED OR NOT. Alleyoop

If the above post doesn't fix it You my have seized a ring. I have done a number Toa Tao's this year (and the Toa Tao shop 35 miles away has done more) When you were able to get it running did the speed top out round 20-25 MPH? If so you need atleast a new piston and gasket set. Check the cylinder for scratches from the bad ring. Hodaka Bob County Line Cycles Grovertown, IN

When you start a bike and let it idle you usually only use one or two of three carb jets. The enrichener and low speed circuit. When you open the throttle to go the needle circuit is involved. Ethanol can gum up easily sometimes and your needle circuit could be clogged. You can either open up the carb and clean it, which I think is foolish, or run Seafoam in the gas tank and it will eventually clean the carb. It sounds like something minor. As long as it starts and idles most anything bad is ruled out.

If it stalls when given gas, then when you can get it going you top out at 25mph before it stalls again, that's minimum a piston and gasket replacement?

The carb would idle crappy or not start OR it would have no to end Very rare for the Idle and main jet to go bad at the same time (unless it's been setting and the gas went bad. If you have access to a compression tester I bet it's down round 90 PSI (with what your saying). Then I would pull the top end. Hodaka Bob County Line Cycles Grovertown IN.

If the compression is low they are very hard to start and they will not hold idle. Since it starts and idles fine but will take some gas It is a Fuel and Air problem due to the much colder temps. Alleyoop

Alleyoop, There is a slot for a screwdriver. I've tried adjusting it in both directions, but neither seem to be working.
Thanks, CG

Ok, let me ask this, AFTER it is nice and warm at least 5 minutes after you start it and let it idle and get warm. IF YOU TURN the FUEL MIXTURE in either direction DOES your IDLE RISE OR DROP.
NOW when you turn it either right or left YOU NEED TO WAIT for about 10 seconds to let the motor catch up with the new setting. The motor will not react immediately. So turn it one way 1/4 turn WAIT listen IF IT DROPS then go the other way.
You are looking for the setting that RAISES the IDLE that is the setting you want.
IF IT DOES NOT RAISE YOUR IDLE turning it in either direction YOUR PILOT JET AND OR PASSAGE are partially clogged. Alleyoop
