I put in a new stator and to my luck, no start. All wires are plugged the same way as before. I took the new one out and put the old back in and it "put puts" but wont start, when given gas. Any clue? Also I got a new magneto, and of course the clearance between the pickup coil and it are so close it hits. Any reason for that? I brought all the right stuff

Do you get spark? Is the plug wet with gas? Compression? You might file one of the mounting holes on the pickup to make it adjustable.

I agree with DW, check for spark by touching the plug electrode to a ground like the valve cover and crank the engine. If there's no spark I bet it's the pickup coil since things sound hinky with it. Test the blue pickup wire from the stator and you should get .05v AC+. The red should be 50v AC+.
