Does a variator need to be worn to rattle? On my scoot ( with 400 miles) I hear it. I thought it was detonation, but I think its my variator instead. Normal? Its a 49cc gy6 from 2011

Its the weights that probably have flat spots on them. They do not put quality rollers in them. Usually the rollers they put in them are cheap and wear pretty quickly. I would bet you most likely also lost a little of your top end. Also you probably have noticed a little higher rpms before the scoot starts to move compared to when they were new. Alleyoop

Not really, but then I'm like that sometimes. Kicked along right at 40 mph for a short distance today. I probably worry to much. Can't be detonation, I'm running 93 octane in it. Also doesn't seem lean, inside of exhaust is kinda sooty.

In other words you really don't know and can't tell if the rattling is coming from the Variator. Pretty easy to find out, just get a screwdriver and hold the tip of the screwdriver up against the COVER by the Variator and put your GOOD EAR to the end of the screwdriver acts like a Stethoscope. Ill try. I'm thinking its gotta be the variator because it don't happen on the stand revved up, only when riding, and it comes from the left side of the scoot from down there by the cvt housing. And its louder when closer to WOT.

It could also be a baffle is broke inside the muffler and they do rattle at high rpms. Also if your muffler has a heat shield that could be loose. Sound travels around on the scoots and it is hard to tell where it is coming from unless you get a funnel or something to pinpoint it. Alleyoop

Yeah. Its always done it, but gotten a little louder lately. Probably variator weights.

I guess ill ride it like that for now. Like I said, it don't do it on the stand running up. Odd. It only does it close to WOT, not at any other throttle position. Like 3/4- full. oh and sometimes it does bog a little when cold afrer choke turns off, but once its warm, alls ok

Im beginning to think this is normal. Both of my scoots do that and one is brand new. The new one did it from day one and the sound changed a bit when I moved over to sliders. Its not pinging either.

Yeah like you say probably normal. It would've done something by now, considering its aluminum if it was sparkknock

Just a Tid Bit of info I've learned>>> If the belt breaks, those weights usually flip over and if you dont know this, It'll be like stuck in high gear. That was my first bad exp with these rattle traps

If the belt breaks I don't think you will go any where.

I meant to say.. After my belt broke, I stuck a new belt on without checking the variator... the weights had flipped, and the scooter was like running in 10th gear on take off.. reset the weights and was good..

Something to check just to rule it out is the rubber bumper on the center stand. It's a little wheel on the stand that rides on a plate on the left side of the engine. If the rubber has worn away or fallen off it will rattle against the engine. That would explain why it doesn't do it with the stand down. The wheel allows the engine to move forward and back with the horizontal movement of the engine from the engine mount.
