i have a 50cc baccio scooter with a 1pe40qmb...or my wife does
short version: it did not shift smoothly...the variator was just filthy heck the whole cvt was... i cleaned the variator and inspected the clutch etc...everything looked good... I put everything back together and it shifted so much better....i took it for a long ride the top end seemed to be higher then BLAMO everything died the lights i mean everything... I figured i was cooked... I coasted to a stop.
Pushed the starter and it worked fine again....its like it has no top end now it will keep going faster and the rpms building until BLAMO everytime

I would first check voltage at idle just to see if you have a regulator problem. The sudden death sounds almost like a CDI or coil getting hot and quitting. They can affect performance too.

Check if your CDI has a wire that is LOOPED comes out of the CDI and then goes back in. Also check if you see wires going into the CVT. I am thinking rev limiter. Alleyoop

i am thinking you might be right about the limiter. The location of my cdi is shall we say horrible.... i will have to take most of the body apart to get to it. i plan on doing it tomorrow. I did take the cvt apart again to make sure i didn't make any mistakes. I'm just surprised there is a problem just having cleaned everything. If there is a limiter thats a good thing right? I don't want to end up hurting the engine.

Are you sure you know how to put the weighs in the Variator? Did you hold the Variator plate and the Variator Face together as you put it back on the Crank Shaft. A lot of people do not hold the assembly tight and the weights get sideways and that would cause no top end and very high rpms. So if that is all you did I suspect some of the weights are sideways so take the variator off and check the weights. And when you pull it off hold the FACE PLATE and the VARIATOR plate in back holding the weights in nice and tight then flip it on you hand and pull the Variator Placte off and see how the weighs are sitting in there. markwb, Do you remember the old Batman TV show back in the 60's? They ran it all the way until 1976 or about then in re-runs. Whenever they would get into a fight, you would see these "sound effects" on the screen like you would in a comic book. A big exploding flash with a word like POW or BANG inside it. BLAMO is the same thing. Think of Ka-BLAM-O!

Here is a Video on changing weights, Notice how he took the Variator off holding the back plate together with the Variator face. That is Also how you put it back on so the weights do not get out of position. Alleyoop

Well if it was running good before you did this AND that is all you did then I would say RE-CHECK them. Alleyoop

Very easy to verify the problem is the Variator, put it on the center stand take the CVT cover off and crank it up. But now you say it will not start so you must of been going like gang busters and maye damaged something inside the motor.
So first thing is Make sure the motor is getting gas. Crank it and take the plug out. If it is WET it is not getting spark. If it is DRY and it did not FIRE then gas is not being sucked into the intake. Then since you have the Plug out, Take your finger and stick it in the plug hole, HOLD THE THROTTLE wide open and crank it, If it has enough compression it will blow your finger off the hole. Get back on some of what I said so we can pinpoint where the problem is. Alleyoop
