Thanks! Will try and source some and give it a go - Should i drain 2-3oz of oil before adding the same amount of stabilizer?
Was listening to it carefully this morning - It only whines when under load (louder on hard acceleration, silent when coasting), everything moves very freely - Seems odd considering the loud noise.

The oil level is fine - He drained and refilled to be sure.
I'm wondering if a gear could have been inverted, taken out and put in facing the other way?

While unsuccessfully trying to locate/resolve another issue, my Sym Mio developed a whining noise from its transmission. Some background info : - Mechanic took transmission apart to try and see if it was the cause of another problem. No damage was found (bearings and gears all in good condition).
- When i collected the scooter it developed a whining noise after a few km of use (similar sound to the gearbox noise when a car reverses)
- I returned it to the mechanic, he also heard the noise, again took apart the transmission but couldn't find any cause (bearings and gears still look fine).
Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this? Could this be dangerous? (lead to a transmission lock-up etc)

I've got the scooter back - Gearbox cleaned up and re-oiled but the noise lives on.
Then a bit of a breakthrough, we discovered that if you push the stand down slightly whilst riding, most of the noise disappears - It seems that the stand is resting against the frame (or something else) and amplifying the vibration, all of the metallic ringing sound is coming from the vibration of the stand.
However, the actual vibration is still there, with the stand out of the equation, its a dull, low frequency rotating noise that starts at 40km/h and increases in frequency with the speed of the scooter. It is intense enough to be felt through the floor at higher speeds.
Certainly seems that that gearbox, clutch, variator and belt are not the issue - I'm now wondering whether i should just forget about it - Its been present since i bought the scooter (2nd hand), and i've done 5000km without much increase in the problem (i think).

Gearbox taken apart and everything seems fine, no signs of damage - Though there was quite a bit of metal floating around. The mechanic is guessing that this loose metal is shavings from when the threads were originally drilled into gearbox casing in the factory.
I'm not feeling confident that this is the cause though, surely if loose metal was causing noise and vibration it would also cause damage. Also doesn't explain how the noise is subdued in the dry.
Anyway - tomorrow he will clean and reassemble - Will post an update then.

Thanks for all the ideas! Finally took it to a mechanic this morning - He drained the gearbox oil and bits of metal came out Doesn't look good. He's going to take it apart and see if its bearing of gear damage - Either way it looks expensive.

Thanks Guitarman, was quite hopeful about this brake idea! But unfortunately doesn't seem to be the cause(applying the brakes makes no difference to the noise).
Having listened more, it does seem drive related - It seems to be a rotational noise that increases in frequency with speed, also, it sounds different under acceleration to deceleration.
I'm going to try and record it on my phone if i can get a good enough tailwind to eliminate wind noise

cyborg - I've checked the rear wheel and cant see anything obvious - Fact that the rattling does not occur when the scooter is revved on the stand (only when riding) makes it really hard to locate though.

The noise is definitely metallic in sound and not linked to engine rpm (it fades only when the speed is reduced, not the engine rpm). Variator has been replaced with no impact on the noise.
Air moisture idea is interesting - Seems strange that moisture in the air would have such a big impact on the noise, but i cant come up with any better ideas. But which component to check?
If its not moisture in the air causing the reduction in noise, then the cause would have to be the tyre or something else that get immediately wet upon riding on a wet surface. Very odd

Please excuse the ridiculously long time to reply! No progress - Took it to a garage, he checked the clutch and it seems fine, thought it was the variator (which seems a bit loose on the cam-shaft), replaced the variator but the rattling persists. Some more info : - Rattling starts at 40kmh and stops at just over 50 km/h (seems its linked to the rotation of something as the speed of the rattle increases between these two speeds until it eventually fades out at just over 50km/h.
- Rattling definately sounds like its coming from the drive area of the bike (rear end, left side)
- No rattling noise when the scooter is revved on the stand - only when ridden
- Very strange, but important, rattling noise is not present (or very quiet) when the road is wet, only in dry conditions
It seems to be getting louder and i've done a few thousand km with it like this (driving me mad)
Any ideas appreciated!

Hi all, I recently bought my first scooter, a 2010 Sym Mio 50cc. It seems to run well except for a rattling sound that appears to be getting worse and seems transmission related - Some info : - Idle to 40km/h - Everything seems fine, no strange sounds.
- 40km/h to 45km/h - At 40 km/h i hear a slightly caustic rubbing sound begin, it sounds like something in the transmission is starting to rotate and is rubbing against another component.
- 45kmh to 55km/h - The rubbing sound gradually turns into more of a rattling/ringing sound (imagine shaking an empty glass bottle with a small nail inside).
- 55km/h - 60 km/h - No strange sounds, (wild guess, but feels as if centrifugal force from fast rotation has stopped the rattling).
Do these symptoms give any indication of the cause?
Any help greatly Appreciated!
Ben
