MELTDOWN!----------------------PLEASE HELP ME!
A friend that knew I had wanted a scooter for economical transportation, recently gave me a 2010 Sunny 300 STD Scooter. It was a bit beat up and in need of a little TLC, mostly cosmetic but it needed a new ignition.
I bought a 2 wire ignition key set for it because when I got it, you could start it up just by twisting the black and red wires together and hitting the starter. {YIKES!} I hooked the two wires up to the two wire ignition and vroom vroom it starts up just fine.
After I did a little poking around in there I realized that there were two other wires that were dangling loose from the same plug. So I went on ebay and bought a 4 wire ignition key set so that I could also change out the trunk lock as well.
I installed it, plugged it right into the connector and tried to turn it on. It didn’t start and I noticed that the lights on the dash didn’t come on like they did with the other ignition. So I turned it off and went to get my ohm meter to make sure my battery hadn’t gone flat.
I came back less than two minutes later and my scooter was smoking from both the ignition wires and down at my battery. The wires and plastic connectors were melting into slag! I managed to get the connectors apart (burning myself twice in the process!)
Now my I need to replace the starter solenoid relay because the fuse melted down and ruined the port where the fuse plugs in, the wires and connectors for the ignition and speedometer, and replace the ignition, AGAIN! (Excuse me but isn’t that the purpose for the fuse in the first place, to prevent this kind of electrical meltdown?)
WELL FOLKS HERE’S WHERE I GOTTA PLAY MY GIRL CARD! My ‘not all that mechanically inclined’ girl card.
Can someone PLEASE explain to me 1) What the flock happened and why? AND 2) Do you know specifically what model and type of 4 wire ignition is supposed to go into my Sunny 300 ST scooter?
Any knowledgable help would be greatly appreciated,
ScooterGurl
