Hi to all,
I have an issue with MP 250-A scooter and I rode on the way home from work on State Highway, was riding at 65-70mph. For some reason, speedo needle decided to go down to 90mph while many cars passing by me at 70mph uphill. I know it's not connected to front wheel, it's connected to rear via wiring and sensor inside. Does that mean belt is wearing out or variable clutch need tuning? Thanks
Thanks

This week, working on MP-250-A scooter. I replaced air filter under seat tray (where battery, fuses, ignition relay and CDI located) i had lawn tractor battery fit inside under seat (not in battery tray cuz its too big).. I forgot to bolt in side of tray. Tray fell out on one side and rubbed against rear tire and knocked off end of air filter. Air filter popped off, leaving 45 degree neck exposed.. I ordered new one with straight short necked cone filter (similiar to K&N filter but cheaper) for $10 from Ebay. Installed straight filter into Carb and repaired tray (forgot to bolt it in so I bolted it). After i did repair/replace, I rode scooter and its performance improved so much, no choking or suffocating for air in Carburetor while going 65mph or more on full throttle. I managed to get it to 75mph on flat highway (I rode on STATE and County highway, no Interstate "I-xxx"). Odd thing is that I noticed Speedo went 85+ mph and Tach show 7,500 RPM. I figured it was going 75mph not 85-90mph I followed cars in morning knowing they are travelling 70mph over 65mph limit. I was able to keep up traffic. So I am suspicious that speedo isn't correct but Tach tells me otherwise. Is belt inside variator clutch slipping or wearing out? Just wonder. I guess that new filter have improved performance on engine and it runs stronger without suffocating or choking at high speed thus churns more torque on variator clutch which cause Speedo to go faster that actual speed. This scooter now have 3,200 miles on it. Suggestion? (PS: Im planning to order correct size battery to fit in battery tray and put lawn tractor battery back to lawn tractor, my scooter body look beaten up but all lights, turnsignal, brake and everything on dash functions 100%. I bought it from my son for $50 ) Thanks Deaf250Scooter

Thanks for info. Yes, for a week when I started to use scooter, I did reached 70mph down the hill without engine cutting (it's engine RPM limiter built in CDI and I throttled down a bit and leaned my head low ), averaging 64mph on flat highway. Now it runs normal and in back of my mind, it's the varator belt. I know how varator works and belt is bit worn which is why it's not reaching 70mph (on website for MP250A sale (new one) and it listed that it can reach 68mph average). Two of my sons decided to ride it and they enjoyed it. My young son who sold me his scooter, he said it runs alot better than he had it.. I told him it's a spark coil going bad and I replaced it. I will have to service the final drive, lubricate and check the belt wears. Is it normal for belt to vibrate on certain speed because when I rode 40 to 50mph, I can feel "rolling" vibration patterns. Bottom line is that I'm satisfied with scooter's performance. I know it have its limitation like I used to ride 50cc moped back in 80's (rode my brother's 79' Batavus Regency HS. I was able to go up to 40mph with throttle tweak )

Hi to all, I just bought MP250a scooter from my son (Bought it for $50 ) because he didn't use much and failed to keep tag updated. He don't want to deal with tax owed over 2 years so I took over and paid my tax and insurance. pretty cheap. Tho I own 2002 Suzuki Volusia VL800, I decided that scooter would be my backup due to my motorcycle engine issue. I fixed the scooter idling issue, I replaced spark coil and sparkplug. Cleaned carburetor and bypassed carburetor vacuum tube (used to connect to Emission Control system that had been ripped out by my friend of former owner before my son bought it from him). It ran smoothly and responsive. It used to go 73mph when my friend first bought it, now 3k miles later and 3 Owners later, It now go up to 62mph maximum. I was trying to figure out why it no longer reach 70mph. Carburetor been cleaned, fuel pump was replaced, spark coil replaced, fuel filter replaced and Cone air filter installed (one from Ebay). Valves had been adjusted as well (.04 for intake and .08 for exhaust). I just wonder if the belt worn out that may have worn to the point that it no longer go on top of variator. But going 60mph is good enough for me to ride to work 25 miles away. Should I just service/lubricate variator? Let me know Thanks Deaf250scooter
