Kz1000St : I don’t think it is an air leak. While running I sprayed starting fluid all over the engine compartment (especially around air filter line and carb). No noticeable change. The diaphragm looked pliant and healthy to me but I will pull it again soon and look for pin holes etc. I did not look very closely at the time.
Richard: Don’t think this carb had a clip. There are no hash marks beveled into the needle. It is just a solid smooth face all the way up to the head. The needle sits in a little pedestal then a plastic three pronged cap that is held down by the spring. Thanks for the suggestions keep ‘em coming please.

I’m thinking this is probably the right track and I was going to do it. The variator looked fairly complicated to take apart at the time. I need to research how to dis- and re assemble before attempt.
It does run very well right up to 5k. I mean if I could just be happy with 55 it runs fine. But you know us tinkerers. We are never happy with what we have right? ;D

? Just a needle and a plastic end piece. Tried making a little washer and raise the needle. Now it runs very badly. I will take that out soon.
