Someone messed with it,,kill switches were mandated law since 68-70 if I'm not mistaken,,,,it's just a ground to interrupt the ignition circuit

You'll have to pull the sending unit which is basically a rheostat ,,,it's a floating ground ,,if you ground the gauge it will just peg full

That'd be great ,,if you could devise a solution to th front end problems with this machine,,,I'm sure a boatload of super low mile units are sitting in garages idle cause of wonky front ends

Probably ignition switch,,,but there must be a kill switch,,,that's mandated by law,,,,but in any case I'd look into getting one installed

Are you sure the valves ar adjusted correctly?,,this sounds lik when it's getting hot after very thing expands the valves are hanging open,,,after it gets hot turn it off then try to restart it,,,,if it's very hard to restart the valves very well may be not closing

You have some seriously high compression,,,it's either that or the plug is firing before tdc,,,put the plug in and don't hook up the coil wire and turn it over,,see if the plug not firing does it,,,and I know it's a stretch but pull the plug and see if there's interference between the plug and piston,,,check the plug and the piston top to see if they're touching slightly

Doubt it,,,not enough miles,,I'd think the valves are ok,,,,,go on YouTube and watch a few videos on carb rebuilding /tear down and inspection ,,,I think your issue is th carb and valve adjustment,,,also you may want to check the new fuel pump,,,it may be putting out too much pressure. If you can find a mechanical regulator get it in line and st it to 2. pounds
