i will test these things as you advise when i return from vacation. the thing behaving the same w/ a new carb as with the previous one makes me think it is not the carb, but i haven't a clue what else it might be. thanks again for all the help

i need a new cvt gasket at least. the old was dry rotted and fell apart. the belt looks pretty good, no cracks anyway. i will buy a new one along w/ the gasket. the variator fan isn't cracked or anything, but it plastic. clutch looks good as far as i can tell at this point, i haven't got an impact wrench at the moment. what else is recommended to replace while i'm in there. are the different weights, springs, etc. worth it? while i'm at it, what about a no rev limit cdi?

I didn't try the valves... But, I did just go get a new carb and it didn't fix the problem. It starts and idles fine, accelerates fine up to about 20 mph, then won't go any faster. Is it the transmission possibly? I accelerated slowly and steadily on the stand and didn't notice it bogging down the same way. I'm going to try to check the cvt.

yet again, perfect advice. i think i've got everything back in place, no leaks, the float needle seems to work right, etc. starts easy, idles fine, doesn't gag when i give it gas. full throttle, though, remains a problem, and i'm only getting about 60% of former top speed. it seems to reach max after only about a third of the way on the throttle, and the rest of travel as i twist back seems to have no further effect. gracias....

Bashan, it is when i turn the key off. at least i think so, i ran out of daylight yesterday. i will try to adjust the float valve appropriately. i tried my best to not maladjust it during cleaning, but i guess i failed. is there a special trick or guideline? i just re-hooked the fine wire at the back of the needle over the tab that sits in between the two plastic floats. like maybe it's on backwards or something? i will be able to take and post pics on saturday, hopefully, if still needed. ongoing thanks for all the assistance, it is much appreciated.

success dis-reassembling and cleaning the carb, thank you. it was really quite clean, may have been some crap in the main jet, when i was younger i might have been able to see better. it no longer gags at all when i give it gas. two items that i need further advice on: 1 - full throttle isn't as wide open as it was before, like about two-thirds...? 2 - when i cut off the engine, gas comes out of the carb drain hose. i tried to re-align the needle valve on the floats, it looked ok to me...?

ah ha, thanks. this is my first time working on the scooter, in case you couldn't tell. i have the carb off now, am going to disassemble it, make sure the main jet isn't clogged. that's my only/best theory right now.
if i buy a new carb, does it come w/ the choke? can i just run w/out the choke, i always kick start it anyway?

i rechecked all over for vacuum leaks, this time w/ carb cleaner, can't find any.
i verified that the slider moves up and down easily.
i tried to remove the carb, but the screws on the choke stripped when the screwdriver got close to them, so i am stuck at the moment util i can get them out. any suggestions on the best way to do this? drill 'em out? i'll have to get them out to either further clean or replace the carb.

the diaphragm cylinder has a hole about the same diameter as the needle, adjacent to where the needle comes down and out of the cylinder. it looks to be manufactured, so i'm assuming it is supposed to be there?

jct842 - i used windex, while it was running, sprayed all around the base of the carb and all over. the engine didn't speed up or slow down at all. it is all nice and clean now, though.
alleyoop - i did as you described and there does not appear to be a leak, not that i can tell anyway. could the needle be 'sticking' some other way? maybe i should just get a new diaphragm and see if that fixes it?
i think my 30% throttle was actually a bit high, it really only goes up to about 10-15% before it cuts out. starts easily, idles fine.
thanks for all input.
