Rear Main Seal (Behind Variator) Keeps Blowing Out By hiskid1973 (Read 2,523 times)

Last month the belt broke in my wife's RX-200. She was going pretty fast and the belt broke into pieces with the steel
wires wrapped behind the kick start gear and tore up the seal. I pressed in a new one and put it back together. My wife rode it to her job a few miles away and saw a big puddle of oil when she returned. I took it apart and found the seal popped out
and oil everywhere. I told my neighbor(retired mechanic) and he recommended some gasket sealer that supposed to harden. I let this set overnight and the next afternoon I figure I'll start it before I put it back. With a in a few minutes of idling I hear a pop and see the seal in out. The outer edge all oily. I had cleaned the bushing and the seat with an alcohol wiper
to remove oil. It something wrong that it don't fit snugly. Should I use some kind of epoxy to hold it in. There were no problem before the belt tore. Thanks for any help. GBY

Is the crankcase venting properly? Is there too much oil in the engine? What weight oil are you using? What size engine?

Sure you are using the correct seal?,,, they should fit in their bore pretty snug and very hard to "blow out",,, and guitar has a point the oil level ok?? Still the seal shouldn't just pop out of it's bore like that,,,did the wire mess up the bore somehow?

It is a 150 cc that is modified. I fill the oil till it reaches the xxx'x at the top with the stick just set in and not screwed in. 10-40 syn. Not sure where the crankcase breather is but there were no leaks before. The seals were got on ebay for a 150 cc. The bore doesn't seem like it was damaged. The seal pushes right in but it sticks out a bit and not flush with the bore. TY

What if the force of the belt bent the kickstart shaft? Even a little might not be noticeable but keep the seal from seating.

Is there any play of the crank shaft in and out? Seals should not just pop right in, they should be a tight fit and need persuaded.

Almost sounds like wrong seal. Did you compare new with the old one? Might be best to order one from a known quality supplier. If it sticks out some there is a problem because OEM doesn't. Is all of the original been removed?

I think we have a replacement seal problem here,,,the seal should not just push in ,,,they should be tapped in minimum with a seal tool and hammer or a small block of wood cut to size and again rapped in a mallet

Guess none of you have ever replaced a Crank oil seal on a scoot. They are rubber seals you do not need a mallet or any tool to put them in you put them in with your fingers.


I think it is the wrong size seal or a cheapo one. But let me ask is this a 157QMJ motor if so get the HONDA seal they are little bit bigger. When my bbk was done a scrappy seal was put in and it POPPED out yes indeed it did lucky for me I was just a couple of blocks from my house when it happened.

Here is what I got now and it has been on for over 5000k miles.

AND HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE: I would get a couple just in case the one on the right side leaks.

It was a generic from ebay. It came in a pack of 4 with two being the size i had. The original was damaged and pushed into the crankcase. It was a bear to remove. The replacement seal just fits in halfway as some of it sticks out. They do just push in. As for the pics it looks like the one on the left, the honda one looks more substantial. How far should it push in? Thanks

Alley knows best ,, I have never seen a seal that just pushes in by hand

You can use anything small and pointed or knife like in thickness. They they have little seal tools, I just use a big needle and stick it in the seal then rotate the whole seal around and pull as you rotate and it rotates out.

But you can buy a tool they have many types here are some: You can make your own as well, hopefully you won't be doing this to many times

neither have I. all the seals I've installed have had to have persuasion of some kind, including a crank seal on my 139qmb.

Piece of cake guys we are not talking about a metal seal it is rubber persuasion I use is my thumb

the seals I've bought have a metal ring in the outside and only the lip is a flexible rubber with a spring.
