Yep parts for the high end brands are expensive sorry to say. Alleyoop
I'll point out that ootscoot offered me the part for $50 cheaper. Unfortunately I was impatient and bought it from the guy in Nashville I asked the guy in Nashville for the 2013 Citycom part so I am assuming we are comparing apples to apples. I didn't know dealers could just jack up their prices like that. I'm gonna go on a road trip south to try to find a dealer.... That is once I get my bike running... Lol.
Yep, Stealers... I mean aHEM... DEALers can charge whatever they think they can get away with. I've been in the Honda dealer here looking for different items and when they quote me a price, I show them the same thing for MUCH less online. I always tell them, I'd rather support local business but if you try and charge me a crazy price, then I'll just go online. I'm not in THAT much of a hurry for it.
If you think everything is going your way, you obviously don't own a Chinese bike.
I was going to look at the starter to see if the one I have would work. You placed the order for the new one.

Read this from start to finish and I'm going to ask one question, with the battery fully charged and cold what is your reading?
11.7 volts isn't going to cut it especially with a 300cc engine. Charge the battery for at least 8 hours on a slow 2amp or less charger, let it sit for one hour then test the voltage. If it's anything under 12.5Vdc then it's weak. Rich rode this scooter the day he passed away.

Thanks JR. Just pointing out that the starter failed the bench test. It literally would not consistently turn without a hammer tap and then it would not turn at all. I tested it several times. Also, the starter was hard to spin and when it would run, it would be slow, then fast, etc. I put in a new battery and it did the same thing.

so some non-sym parts might work?
I suspect so

Some people don't consider that sometimes things can be repaired instead of replaced? This video is for a GY-6 but the principal is the same. One has nothing to lose if you can't fix it?
Sounds to me like your starter motor has brushes that are worn out or sticking. If you can tap on the motor and get the starter to work, the brushes are sticking and not making very good contact with the armature, or the springs that hold the brush up next to the armature are weak or broken, or the brushes are worn down so short that they no longer reach the armature. I would open the starter up carefully(watch for flying parts), check the brushes for condition, make sure they move freely in their holders, clean the armature contact area with a toothbrush, blow out all debris from the armature and field windings, lube the bearings. Brushes can be replaced, if you can find them, Certainly cheaper than a new starter,
Just watched that fantastic video! Thanks, JR, for posting that. This really shows how easy it is to remove and inspect. I really like the o-ring mods!

I will probably go ahead and give it a try seeing as I still haven't gotten the new starter that I ordered. What kind of lube should I use? (That's what she said).
I can't imagine finding the brushes because I can't even get the starter. Does anyone have any advice on how I should handle trying to find parts for the Sym Citycom 300i? or how to try to figure out if other parts will work with it?
