my scooter has been running lean since day one with backfiring, but now I'm not sure if its because all the stress of the last couple days. the exhaust pipe is rattling like crazy when I reach about 35 miles an hour and since last night the back firing sounds like a gunshot. well not a gunshot but it's pretty damn loud. I also noticed while adjusting the idle screw and pushing the snorkel, smoke comes out. it comes out of the top of the snorkel and from under air filter box

Did you check the exhaust and see if it was secure and had a gasket at the engine. Hmmmm..did you? We discussed this Her-yuk....at least I did. Don't make me give you a lecture....uh wait, you were practicing martial arts? Never mind...you're good.

Well if you don't fix that backfiring it make make mince meat out of your exhaust valve then you will have bigger problems than what you have now. So start fixing the stuff or it is going to cost you plenty more. Alleyoop

No no Grasshopper....this EXHAUST gasket:
Or an alternative that I like to use:
And then make sure that the exhaust pipe (header) is tight against the head with the two 10mm tower bolts. The head gasket goes between the head and the cylinder, let's just leave that one be for a while. Pop a cap? Am I in danger? Alley? Do something!
Get 3/16" vac line or fuel line from the auto store....dirt cheap. An intake snorkel is $15 to $20. Check with John at NYC parts, he can help if you're not sure what to get.

Thanks Bashan, They call me sensei Pop a cap cuz i can open a beer with my iron thumb. so moving the snorkel side-to-side and seeing smoke come out does not necessarily constitute an air leak?

Is this what you are calling a SNORKEL?? That is the intake manifold and if you can move that side to side and smoke and spray are coming out you have a very bad air leak. It is probably cracked and is causing a lot of your problems. So Get a new one, adjusting the valves is NOT going to help that problem sucking in all the extra air and loosing suction to draw fuel in. Alleyoop IS THIS WHAT YOU ARE CALLING A SNORKEL?

no I was calling the other end the snorkel and the smoke is coming out from under the air box where the snorkel connects. it does look like it may have some rough edges to it so I'm going to give it the WD 40 test
