In the last ten years I must have seen a hundred threads about backfires on this and other forums and every one of them says lean. I have in the past looked at a backfire as a tuning aid. A bang and it needs a larger jet!
When we were kids we used to coast down long steep hills and turn off the ign, wait 15-20 sec and turn the key back on. Those were straight sticks and 40's 50's cars and it would eventually blow the muffler and some times the whole exhaust system. A 12 gauge was quite compared to a car with a long tail pipe.

we where talking about backfiring. you're talking about circumstances leading to that such thing happenning. thats not a normal running condition.

Running lean isn't a normal condition either!
