Did you check the carb diaphragm?,,,may hav a tear or small pinhole not letting the slide lift correctly,,,,just a thought It looked good and I actually disconnected the air box and watched the slide move.

I got as far as 4 turns out with the A/F screw and no real difference.
I couldn't tell if the idle went up or down at all, I could only turn the screw with the engine off. The A/F screw is under the carb facing straight down at the front of the carb. You really can't see it, great job by the designers on that one.

Ok lets try something this is really easy and quick and see if it still bogs really bad or it helps.
UNPLUG THE ENRICHER from the HARNESS that will keep it feeding fuel all the time. That will tell us if you have a fuel delivery problem with the PILOT JET and its passage and or the fuel outlets. Alleyoop

No difference. Hot or cold it bogs, unless I take the inlet tube for the airbox off.

WHAT!! I must have missed that SO if you take the air tube connected to the Carb OFF it runs better?
If so then we are going the wrong way IT IS getting to much fuel and not enough AIR. Sorry I missed that point. So Re-connect the ENRICHER and Turn the fuel ratio screw CLOCKWISE to LEAN IT OUT actually loosen it up and rotate it and turn it clockwise until it stops and then turn it Counter Clockwise 2 turns and connect the Air Filter tubing. Also check the VACUUM line going to fuel pump and see if it is wet, Just to make sure it is NOT getting fuel from some other place other than the carb. Alleyoop

Gravity feed tank and I went from 1/2 turn out to 4 turns out with no change.
And I know what you mean, everything to this point has pointed to a lean condition except for the tube issue..lol I'm so confused...
I'm gonna go run to the store and get a new spark plug.

Warmed it up on the old plug, then put in the new plug. No difference.

You said gravity feed BUT does it go to a PETCOCK which operates with VACUUM? If so check the Vacuum hose going to the PETCOCK. Alleyoop

Just a regular lever operated petcock. No vacuum actuated petcock.

Ok time for some pictures of the carb area and tank and how it is setup. Something is not jiving here, these are pretty simple carbs and fuel delivery systems. You either are not getting enough fuel or to much fuel. And for some reason yours is getting to much fuel because you need to let as much air as possible to have it run half way descent.

Liduno, did you look through the air filter system and make sure nothing is blocked? There's a wire screen in there before the carb, I've seen pieces of cloth in them. Just a wild thought, it gets enough air for idle but bogs when it needs more. It's a stretch, I know. Just look through the induction system. Is the filter OK? I'm spit balling.

Alleyoop, Normally I would agree 100% but I just took it for a blast to check the plug and it's lean. I took the cover off the air box but still ran the filter. That made it so it would at least rev out a little but the pipe was still glowing, still got back fires on deceleration and didn't really pull to top end. Had great torque out of the hole but then kind of just flattened out power wise. I think I'm going to drill this jet out tomorrow and see what happens, jets are cheap if I go too far. The only thing I can think of is it needs more airflow to get the fuel from the bowl. Here is a picture from the internet, same buggy as mine but mine is uglier..lol The petcock is to the rear of the tank and is just about an inch higer than the fuel inlet on the carb.

Bashan I did see the fire arrest style intake and it is clear. The filter looks like new. I would think if it was clogged it would be super rich.

Now one other thing that would cause a red hot pipe is timing. Did you buy this from someone that could not get it running right and that is why he got rid of it? That could be why it is backfiring and or it is leaking from the exhaust pipe connected by the motor.
So lets check the timing on this motor. Bring it up to TDC and look at the peep hole to see where the mark is pointing on the flywheel.

When I was adjusting the valves I had both peep holes open, I could not see a single mark on the fly wheel or the timing chain gear.
