I had hand warmers on my 88 yugo too, never had to use them. In fact I never had to walk with the yugo, and probably spent a total of 2 or $300 in repairs for 65k miles I drove it, spent as much as the yugo cost new in repairs for the chevy I drive now! (so far)
gov never should have bailed gm's arse out, ford did not need it. (or maybe just gave some free money to ford just cause gm and chrysler got it) They got the free money cause of bad engineering and bad accounting.

Cause when a alternator for a Taurus costs $400 there is a big profit margin!
Still got my good old 93 Chevy Silverado, now she's got 179,000k and when it threatened ice the other day I fired her up to just let her run a minute, had been started in over a month, when the roads are bad I put her in 4 wheel drive and go especially since the wife is a nurse and has to go to work.
She has had a water pump and last year I had to break down and put a starter on her, can still buy a starter for the last of the Chevy 350 small blocks for $35. What a legacy, small block Chevy started I believe in 54 with the 265 and ended up at 350, one of the most dependable engines in history. Damn good racing engine too.
Still has OEM alternator and the rest of the engine parts, cold air, cruise even still works, been a good one.

I bought a new 79 gmc pu. I put about 120k on it in ten years. Got rid of it just before the body was to fall off. (and bought the new yugo) Always ran good when it was running, from about 30k every 10k or so it ate a fuel pump. I ended up buying 9 or 10 pumps. Would trash the spring and start running out of gas at highway speeds and soon as you let up it might run ok to limp home or to a auto parts place at 30mph. (after I got rid of it some one was telling me it probably had the wrong cam follower in it) You don't know how many times I had to walk on that one. Had I bought a ford I might still have it as the bodies were hot dipped and the gm was primed mostly and bare metal in a few other spots. Actually paid extra for rust proofing and when I went back to complain about rust the dealership had gone down the tubes and some other dealer was there. It had a 305 and it was a hell of a good motor, when it ran.

Had a Chevy Line 6 in my 72 Nova and you couldn't kill it with a stick. I was moving and had a new car so I tried an experiment. Drained out all the oil and ran the hell out of it. I put over 15k miles on it with NO OIL. What an engine.

I have another legendary engine in my '98 Dakota. 150K on that 318 and still purrs. The brakes are another story. Ford did get bailed out, only earlier and discretely through foreign subsidies. In effect the U.S. paid for plants in other countries and training there workers and Ford reaped the rewards.

I had a old Dodge Dart, actually my dads that I knocked a hole in the oil pan one night out parking with my girl friend in the woods and ran it home over 20 miles with no oil, fixed the hole and ran it for another 45k, the old slant 6.

At least with a Chevy you can afford cab fare, with a Ford you only can push, those nice options like hand warmers cost a bundle on a Ford!

Yea all teasing aside it's what you like, bad thing about a Dodge is re-sale value. I'll never forget in 2008 my wife had one of those fully loaded Dodge vans a 06 and we wanted to trade it for a small gas saving car and when she looked up the trade in blue book value of it and then the value of my 93 Silverado she flew off the handle and could believe a 15 year old truck had more re-sale than her 2 year old van, mentioned to me about trading the Silverado and I just looked at her and said nothing, traded the van the next week! John That's the good thing about GM, only takes nickels and dimes to keep them going but the others = dollars and more dollars!

I'm historically a cheap bastard when it comes to parts for my work vehicles,,,i give them what they need but no wheels or anything like that,,,i either get my parts(mostly napa) and get the lifetime warranty parts and brakes,,so i turn them back in and it's "free" except my labor,,,so it works out,,,it's the same with anything i had 4 3series bmw's in a row,,,and a 5series before them,,,got the 5 used with a little over 30 thou on it,,,,narry a peep altho it loved to eat brakes,,,great sedan,,,first 3 ,,3series were good the last one ,,,,HOLY HAMSTERS!! a bigger peice of sh!t was never created,,,ended up selling it with only 28,000 miles on the clock,,,i couldn't take it anymore,,,it was either more parts and work or the chainsaw,,,so i got rid of it,,, Jesus what a pile,,,the bmw bikes,,,great,,,,cars not so much,,,never had a bad chev,,,or ford for that matter,,,they just flat out work for me,,,i got lucky i guess

Had a friend once that did one thing, drive them and when I say drive them, he would be to the point of tires blowing out before he would stop long enough to put new ones on, wasn't money he just didn't give a crap about taking care of a vehicle.
He bought a 94 Silverado and at the 180k mark it still had all OEM oil, parts, coolant, and battery. He did drive a lot of miles yearly, he put 2 sets of tires on it to get to this 180k, when I ay OEM oil I mean the oil it came from the factory with, damn good thing this engine didn't use oil.
He passed by the Ford place one day and saw a new fully loaded F-150 he just had to have, traded the Silverado and off he went on the I never do any PM on anything to my vehicles. The F-150 couldn't handle the strain and after around 75k it dropped dead. He put plenty of warranty on it and while it was in the shop he was asked if he had ever changed the oil? Of course he said no, why would I do that? The Ford place had a fit and didn't want to honor his warranty on the engine problems he had that day. He finally worked it out, got it running, traded it the next day for a Chevy!
He has never changed but still drives Chevys!
