I own a 125cc 1988 Yamaha Riva. I would like to ride through Sequoia Park which includes a 20-mile ride up a mountain road. Do you think my scooter can handle it? Do I need to worry about overheating?

I wouldn't think so,,, but it depends on the heat of the day and how well you keep your machine,,, fresh oil that's checked regularly level wise and lube chain and general service ,,,

Riding purposely slow up the hills would decrease the odds of problems, right?

Yep. You guys over paid.
On your trip, be sure and pack some ice and a lot of asprin. You're going to need them for the headache you might get from idiots laughing at you.
Any motorized bike should make the trip as long as you don't try and make it fly. Don't push it past it's limits and you should be fine.

Not having driven in mountains I have no personal experience. Would it be better to have the scooter set up for higher altitudes and accept it will run rich in the lower altitudes?

Most likely an a/f adjustment would be enough, having the next size larger jet up from what you are currently running would be smart just in case you need to do a quick swap.

Being a hyper CHEAP BASTARD when i buy rides i'm always on the lookout for the next build victim,,,,so used is the way for me,,the stella was new but i got it for almost 2g's below the local dealer so i couldn't resist,,,anyways getting back to the thread i don't see any problem with mountains as long as the bike is serviced correctly and is in overall good shape ,,,and you take care with it,,i've been thru that area,,,shouldn't be an issue
