I own a GY6 50 cc Chinese scooter assembled in Canada. I have been riding it for the last five years , did 5,500 kms on it.
The automatic start was giving me problems since the beginning. I was kicksarting it ; I would push push the Start Button , it would crank but not start then kickstart it .
A few weeks ago the kicksart started slipping . I decided to fix the kick start and tackle the automatic start problem at the same time. I purchased the kick start kit – gear, spring etc - , an AC CDI , starter solenoid and new spark plugs. I put together the kick start assembly watching you tube videos ,installed it but now when I pushed the automatic start I button instead of cranking it would just click, solenoid ??. I could not even kickstart it.
I discovered this site and started to educate myself going through the various threads and library. .I changed the CDI, installed the the new solenoid and changed the spark plug , started doing some tests .
There was no gound on my motor so I installed a ground wire to one of the screws on the head and attached it to the chassis.
Fuse OK
Did continuity test for the Start Button , Start Button ok.
I connected the battery which was on a charger to see if I am getting 12Volts. When I turn the key the fuel gauge starts going up the lights come on but when I push the start button everything dies., lights go off fuel gauge goes down., I got a 13.4 volt reading on it as soon as I disconnected it from the charger , but it would not hold the charge reading would go down to 12.5v within an hour. When I connected it and pushed the start button , I saw 10.5 volts on my DMM for a split of a second
I want to connect the car battery to see if the problem is with the battery but I am afraid to damage the car battery if there is short somewhere.
I need some guidance , feel like I am shooting in the dark..

Do you have a GROUND wire from the NEGATIVE post of the battery to the FRAME? YOU NEED TWO important grounds ONE from the motor to the FRAME and ONE from the NEG POST of the battery to the FRAME.
If GROUNDS are good then just jump the battery from the car. Connect the RED CABLE TO THE CARS POSITIVET POST then to the POSITIVE POST on the SCOOT BATTERY, Then connect the BLACK CABLE to the CARS NEG POST and with the other END TO the NEG POST of the SCOOT. Then see if it turns the starter, IF it clicks or does nothing THEN GET A SCREWDRIVER and TOUCH BOTH TERMINALS ON THE SOLENIOD, IF it then turns the starter the SOLENOID IS BAD. Alleyoop

Thanks for the speedy reply
Did the continuity test , NEG battery terminal to Frame , getting the continuity sound. I will connect car battery as per your instructions and see the results

Recommend that you only jump from a car battery when the car engine isn't running.

Do you mean the R/R instead? Also it is very rare for Chinese scooters to have the head light come on with just the key on? Do you mean instrument lights? While you may indeed have a poor battery it's certain you have some grounding issues as well. What brand, year, model is this scooter? JR

The scooter is a 2009 AMG., Canadian company that assembled the scoots in Montreal from Chinese parts, they closed their doors. Why did I change the CDI ? Simply lack of knowledge. A month ago when I started researching into the problem , I read somewhere that the CDI was a part that frequently goes bad., did not know how to test it, found one on ebay for $10.00 and ordered it. Headlights coming on when I turn the key. The slider switch on the right handle bar is broken., came off. I have the metallic ball the closes the contacts glued to the left most position. I ordered one though

UPDATE: I connected the car battery , it cranked !!! Went and bought a new battery and installed it. Bingo. I don't even have to kick start , it starts from the start button . I need to replace the start button, kill switch assembly. The one I bought is not good will not accomodate the mirror. As you can see mine is fixed at the left most position. Is this high beam ?? What is the middle one ? Probably draining my battery at start.. Any idea where I can get this ? Clicked through the banners to see if any one of them carries it could not find . How about the one on this link ?? www.ebay.com/itm/New-Right-Light-Start-Kill-Switch-GY6-Moped-Scooter-50-150-7-WIRE-Mirror-Hole-/271262631577?hash=item3f28834699&vxp=mtrYou guys rock .. Thanks a lot. Happy man..

ronb The reason your batter is running down is because you have the switch crossed over to the 12vdc line in that switch. The lights do NOT come on with the key but rather burn only when the scooter is started. You are crossing 12Vdc from the battery to the voltage from the R/R that run the headlights. If you continue to do this you'll burn the R/R up if you haven't already. Remove the ball. JR

JR
This is known as an AMG Boreal, I read somewhere that it had Sachs engine ?? Where on scoot can I find the FY50QT-5 ??
You are right again. When the switch broke , I glued the ball. Lights would burn , when the scooter was running. I may seem knowledgeable but I am not; can you try to explain what I did ? I will remove the ball as suggested . Will that eliminate the headlights completely ??

If this is the case then it means the lights run off the battery which is not very common for scooters especially 50cc ones. But if the lights only burn when the scooter is running then it indicates they run off of R/R which is extremely common. Older model scooters had a head/tail light on/off switch along with a hi/lo beam switch. later on they went to a hi/lo switch only and the lights burn all the time for safety. Some states require on all the time while a few still give you the choice. This switch with the ball you glued in is a two position switch where you can choose to have just the tail lights on or tail and head lights both on. If this is the case leave the ball in until you get a new switch. Now that you said it's the Bolero it is even more confusing? The model I mentioned has a head light on/off switch which is exactly what you show in your picture with the ball glued in with NO engine kill switch? The Bolero does not have a on/off headlight switch but does have a engine kill switch located on the right side by the start button? Here is the scooter I asked you about and it looks just like the one you pictured? www.jr-richscooterdoc.com/Peirspeed_sachs_FY50QT-5_owner_manual.pdfHere is the Bolero: www.jr-richscooterdoc.com/Peirspeed_Bolero_Owner_Manual.pdfAs you can see the Bolero is a Vespa style scooter it is not the scooter you listed in the picture. Yes they have Sach engines. JR

Hi JR, I said Boreal in my post and not Bolero. Looking at the manual, mine is indeed an FY50QT-5. everything is identical. Thanks to you after six years of ownership I have a manual. As far as the light switch goes. Till the switch broke . the headlights would not come on when I started the scooter. I had to flip the switch. However when the switch broke and I glued the ball to left most position it started to come on automatically . In Quebec cars must have their headlights on all the time. News to me also, according to the manual I don't have a kill switch. The only kill switch on the scooter is on the kick stand. By the way , yesterday before I started the scoot I removed the headlight bulb so that it would not drain battery power. I can't tell whether it is because of that , new battery and new plug or some other reason the crank force seemed much stronger. Should I still leave the ball where it is ? Should I order the switch previously mentioned ? www.ebay.com/itm/Scooter-Left-Right-Handle-Switch-Control-Assembly-GY6-50cc-125cc-150cc-Moped-/191659209547?hash=item2c9fc7734b&vxp=mtrThanks again
