I have noticed that as well but can't give an honest answer. I grew up on a farm and helped with fire wood chores and all we used was the used oil we got from the trucking company. We also used that oil in the tractors so 50W comes to mind. Now days I prefer synthetic 5W50 diesel oil I used to us in motorcycles. The engine gets Lawn Boy brand mixing oil.

Don't think it is that big a deal as long as it is the sticky stuff. Have used it on non o-ring motorcycle chains too. It is formulated to not get thrown off from centrifugal force. Also good for lubing up machine shop tools that are not going to be used for a period of time too. It stays put and is cheap.
