My 1988 Yamaha Riva 125cc 4-stroke started burning oil.  I am losing about half a quart every 1,000 miles.  Any way I can fix this?

i don't know alot about the riva but if there are alot of miles on it i'd bet on worn rings. try this, do a compression test. then remove the spark plug and drop a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder and repeat the test. if the compression increases, worn rings. if it doesn't, valves.

1988 got some mile on her.
Your going to have to take it apart.
You will have to have the Bore and Piston Measured correctly to even Consider Rings.
How many miles on her?

23,000 miles on it. Parts are hard to find. Will probably just tolerate the burning oil. Thanks guys.

If you can pick up some gaskets so you can do a check if the cyl. walls are still decent I'll bet rings can be found. It might be a bit harder to come up with an over sized piston and rebore. Also could try other oils, some do better at sealing and can help extend engine life. Don't know what you are using but synthetic might not be the best to use at this point. In the old days as a kid we used to use thick oil to be able to keep our junk cars running but they refused to start in the winter with thick oil !

Using walmart conventional car oil 20w50.  Winters rarely drop below freezing here in central California.  1988 Yamaha manual calls for 20w40, but no one makes that grade anymore.
