Did that. Had to get the darn thing out with needle nose pliers first then cut a slot in it so I could turn it

Where you plugged the Vacuum line on the intake Get Put a hose on it and run some gas down the hose STRAIGHT into the intake and put you plug back on and see if it FIRES.
YOU SURE YOU HAVE SPARK? Are you holding the spark plug on the VALVE COVER? Holding it on the frame is NOT GOOD ENOUGH it may fire on the frame but it may not fire on the motor IF there is a bad GROUND from the motor to the frame.
DO YOU HAVE A GROUND WIRE on one of the valve cover bolts going to the frame? Alleyoop

Yep got spark. Also poured gas into the vacum inlet to no avail.
I'm still wondering if the spark plug is making contact with the boot in the engine. The boot is pretty long

What you can do is go to the auto parts store take you plug with you or a spare and buy a new boot cap. They screw onto the COIL wire so you just unscrew the one on there and screw the new one onto the coil wire. Alleyoop

Is it me or does this boot look too long?

It all depends how far down the clip is in the boot to grab the plug threads. So get a straw look down in there and stick the straw to where the clip is mark it and then hold it against the plug and see if it is reaching. You normally can feel it click when it grabs the plug threads. Alleyoop

Yes. There used to be a tester that did just that. I used it on automobile engines on each cylinder to find the one not working. It had a built in light that flashed if the plug was getting juice and working. But, I haven't seen one in many years. So a jumper wire should work.

My new carb should be coming today so we'll see if that clears up the not getting fuel issue.
When I do the finger test for compression my finger comes out dry so that's one issue. Timing could be another.
I want to make sure I'm getting fuel first.
BTW- I don't deserve the title "certified clinician" by my name.
"Dumba** who is in over his head" is more accurate

I got the new carb on. Still won't start. I reattached the vacuum petcock and it sounds different - kind of knocky and grindy. No gas in spark hole. Would the next step involve taking the head off? I hope not.
