My 1988 125cc Yamaha Riva is burning oil. I have to add some oil every week. What should I do first? Replace the piston rings?

If it smokes all the time then yes it is the rings if it only smokes it when you first start it and then as it warms up it goes away then it is your valves. Alleyoop

If you determine it is in fact rings and you decide to re-ring it,.... before you put the rings in you could try one of those products that claim to dissolve varnish in the engine. Remote possibility that the rings could be stuck and that could loosen them up and temporarily stop the oil burning. (nothing to loose except price of chemical) And parts for the riva will probably be hard to find.

Changed my oil today. Used high-mileage oil for the first time ever. I think it is making a big difference. Rode 50 miles and my oil level has not dropped. If this keeps up, I will be very happy. Jct, thanks for the idea.
