Has anyone used the Vermont loophole when buying a scooter without a title? If I understand correctly you don't need a title for anything under 300cc or over 30 years old. You don't even need to be a Vermont resident. You just pay a fee and you have Vermont plates then you can transfer the plates to your state.
This may just be an urban myth. I dunno. I'm looking at some junk 150cc bikes to fix up and some don't have titles. I have plenty of cop friends who can run the vin to see if it's hot.
I could just save my money and get a good titled bike but, for me at least, half the fun of this hobby is wrenching and bringing something back from the dead
Thanks

I have done the VT thing for my moped. it's true VT does not require you to be a resident. it's true you do not need a title for any bike less than 300cc's and more than 15 years old. all you need is a bill of sale, a completed VT registration form and the fee. you don't even need insurance. they will mail you a VT plate and registration which you then take to your local DMV and exchange it. it's completely legal and it works for most states.

I might be wrong but there may be a Maine loophole as well. you would need to contact a resident of Maine, sign over power of attorney and then I think all you need is a bill of sale, completed DMV form and the fees. the resident would then register the bike and mail supporting paperwork and plate to you.

If the bikes are in tow or impound lots just lien sale them or just do a lost title if you have a bill of sale,,, I've done that quite a few times in Cali,, and they are raging a$$holes about registration here

I did the Vermont thing twice. It works. Maine too, although New York caught up with me on that one but not because of Maine's procedure.

I was checking out the web site for Moto Recycle. For 50cc and less with auto transmission it can be any year. But $75 for a title for my $125 craigslist find without title? I guess that is the cost of ignorance.
