I can't take all the credit. I have an amazing team around me and together we've done some great work in this program in just a few short months. This program is really exciting for us and the entire industry. I personally have been having a great time being apart of it and we have several applicants currently being considered for entry into the program right now. It's a great feeling to give back and see such quick success for those already in the program! Spread the word... we're looking for entrepreneurs around the country to join! |

I even put this article over at Modern Vespa. They have an international readership that is quite active. Maybe a few of their member Vespa dealers might think about coming on board.

It's been sad seeing so many great dealerships closing over the last few years... due to retirement, death, or simply closing the doors due to mis-management. We hope to start to trend dealerships in the other direction. Local dealerships are needed to promote to and support the local communities. Please share and spread the word about this new program as much as you can. We're looking for entrepreneurs to join as well as already established dealerships that want to take the next step! |

Speaking as a not so recently closed dealer, I can tell you that owning a dealership is fraught with obstacles. Chief among them certainly has to be demographics as well as geographical location.( Think colleges and beach/vacation locales.) The further north of the Mason-Dixon line, the shorter the scooter season.That goes for topography as well. Mountains and hills do not play well with 49cc scooters.As easy as it is to get a motorcycle learners permit,it is still a major hurdle to selling scooters that are able to hold their own in urban traffic. Additionally, in many states where scooters are considered motor vehicles, dealer licensing is a MAJOR consideration. Along with the various state DMV requirements comes the extremely sensitive subject of Garage Liability Insurance. In PA it's a game changer. You must have Garage Liability Insurance to maintain your dealers license. Insurance carriers will refuse to insure dealers of "Chinese Only" dealerships. They prefer national " Name Brands". I was quoted as much as $20,000 yearly premiums. We were involved in a $850,000 lawsuit/shakedown. Operating without Garage Liability is a deal-breaker. Our business volume was pretty evenly divided between sales and service, with profitability leaning more towards the service end of the business. Our sales figures include not only scooters, but small ATV's and Dirt Bikes as well. The sales and service of small ATV's are what carried us through the fall and winter months.(From a profitability standpoint both in sales and service, those little ATV's are gold mines.) I love scooters. I love riding scooters. I loved selling scooters. To start a dealership from scratch is just not a prudent business decision... in view of the conditions stated above. However that that doesn't preclude having "a wild hair up your arse" moment.  I applaud Bintelli's efforts and wish them a world of success. (As an anecdote, I was once called by another dealer who wanted my opinion of adding a Taiwanese brand of scooters to their Chinese line-up. They wanted to know the service reliability. I told them "I don't know... we've been a SYM/Lance dealer for two years and with the exception of one set of brake pads and oil changes, have never had one come in for service!" |

From a Liability standpoint it's a crusher,,, I love bikes and scooters and have had moments of mental instability thinking of getting into the game,,,,then I come to my senses and sh!tcan the idea,,,the racing analogy comes to mind ,,,, " how do you make a small fortune racing?,,,, start with a big one"

In our world there is just way too many lawyers.
One of my customers was an old retired orthopedic surgeon. Nicest guy you could meet. Between owning race horses and golf he caught the wild hare up his too. He decided to open an office a couple mornings a week and see 4 to 6 patients a week who were looking for a second or third opinion. Being very qualified and holding a slew of US medical patents he set out to find out his costs. After seeing what malpractice would cost he gave up on that idea. About 40 years ago he would have had to charge over a $1000 a crack to look at a couple xray's and a hour talk with the patients just to pay expenses. To see that guy cuss all one needed to do is put lawyer and insurance in same sentence/

Seems like everytime I even get near a lawyer...it costs me a couple grand. Hell, my daughter is getting divorced and needed 5K for a lawyer. She went to the 1st. National Bank of Dad.
