The previous owner had snapped the exhaust bolts into the top end so I ordered a new one with gaskets. I made sure it was installed with gaskets and it was at tdc when I placed the camshaft in. While putting it back together I forgot the tensioner would roll it back a bit so I'm one link off on timing. I left the valves at the .002 in and .003 ex that the were before. Put it all back together and everything was connected but all I'd hear was a puff sound and the engine wasn't turning over. I had a spark and no way of checking compression so I put a shall bit of starter fluid in the carb and it fired right up. I had backfiring when going full throttle so I adjusted the idle mix and that was fine. Turned it off and now it starts find with no boost from starter fluid though it turns over twice with a puff sound on each turn then fires up on the third turn. There is a lot of tapping on the valves and slight surges while on center stand. I took a small ride to see if itd die after riding for a second and noticed it took awhile to get to 40mph and couldn't get past that speed. Speedodometer was reading fine until then as well but when it hit 40 mph it bounced all over. Sorry for all the details but I'm not sure exactly what's going on so I thought I should include as much as possible. I'm thinking maybe trying to adjust the valves to .004 and .005 and seeing if that helps and if not then fixing that one link difference on the chain. If anyone has any better ideas please let me know. Thank you.

STOP.........go into the library and read how to time your engines valves. The chain can only go on one way and can not be off a link.
