I was just putting down the road, slow at that, when the motor let out what sounded like an electronic screech, then the motor started running rough, wouldn't go,above 35 with out breaking up and sputtering, idled ok but rough, ideas?

Make sure the plug wire didn't come loose.

How does the exhaust look while running? Does it smell funny?

Then nothing strange with those is check on the oil level just for fun. Then open up the CVT cover and make sure nothing has gone horrible in there. Belt going or going bad would probably make that noise.

Thanks, I will check, oil was good though, I also found a bare spot on the stator, wire where it may have rubbed the inside of the flywheel, would that cause a short?

Yes that would cause a short
