I have a 2008 Genuine Buddy that I’ve been working on for some time. It starts right up on the first push on the button but it never seems to get out of choke mode. It revs pretty fast so you have to pull back on the grips to keep it stationary. I’ve tried to adjust the idle and air mixture to no avail. Once it warms up, the idle returns to normal but after applying throttle, returning to idle takes about two to three second which makes stopping and staying stopped a challenge. It’s is also producing an irritating cloud of smoke from the muffler. Im trying to order a new carb but they are super hard to find. I was also thinking about replacing the reed valve and taking apart the oil pump and cleaning or replacing it. Am I on the right track? Thanks in advance.

Two Smoker, Sounds like you have a Air Leek. the Air leak will keep the R's up as your stating. The air leaks are mostly a Crank Seal. What color Smoke? Light or Dark? Bluish or Whiteish? You do Not need a new carb or reed's or oil pump.. your symptoms are darn near text book air leak..

This morning I took out the oil pump and cleaned it. Put it back in and checked the flow but nothing is coming out. Could this be the white smoke culprit? Not enough oil?

Would be White smoke if she was liquid cooled sucking coolant. but its not liquid cooled. Or if a Two Stroke MX'r with a gear box the gear oil sucking thru a crank seal or case halves would be white. but theres no gear box. What type/brand injection oil are you using? Are you adding anything to your fuel?
