Gear oil leak

I was hanging out with a friend today as he was doing a cam swap on his tao tao powermax 150cc. While I went on a beer run, he put on the rocker assembly. He somehow (I can only assume) over torqued one of the nuts on the assembly and broke it. It seems by doing this he did something ( I honestly don’t know what) that caused his gear oil to start leaking near the exhaust pipe (towards the front of the cvt area) under the engine.
I’ve personally never encountered this kind of problem. I’m wondering if anyone knows what he might have done & how it can be fixed?
I’ve looked on line for any videos that might help, the pickins are slim to none. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is a Cylinder Stud he broke so I don't know how the two of you fixed that. before you fired her up. With the Broke off Nut on the Rocker Stud you now the Base Gasket to the Cylinder that is now leaking. it ain tgunna be gear oil, its coming from the base by the pipe.
Cylinder Studs are junk on these scoots, for Any and every BBK install or similar replace the Studs with some Taida brand, there usually under $7. Yup so now he must remove the entire top end and replace all his studs. If he broke One he has over torqued them all.. And don't got god sake run a hunk of Threaded Rod inlaced of the stud, there a guy on another board doing that right now, torquing Threaded Rod would be like trying to Torque a Rubber Band. When you torque you are Stretching the stud it only has so much elasticity. then they won't hold a clamping surface no matter how much you tighten them, and Never tighten them more yo will draw up the metal around those studs on the base of the engine case and Never get a base gasket to seal. Use Only a Inch pound torque wrench.

Thanks czmdiver. He actually broke the rocker assembly, not the stud (my fault, I saw that I wasn’t clear on that). I think your probably correct tho, he lifted the base of the cylinder up & created a leak.
In doing that, somehow he also created a leak coming from the front of the cvt (where it connects to the motor). It’s definitely leaking gear oil, you could smell it....I personally hate the smell of gear oil, so I was able to tell quickly.
I’ll definitely advise him about replacing the studs with Taida ones, I think that’s a good call.
I’ll get some pictures from him & do my best to post them when he gets home from work tonight.

Do you mean he broke the lock nut off the Tappet Adjuster? yaaaaa mann get some pictures
The CVT Gear oil is in the Back by the rear Wheel, it can't come up front to the cylinder base. There is a crank Seal behind the Vari that may be leaking?

It was leaking from the crack between the two parts of the motor (middle of the picture circle), this is where I really thought it smelled like gear oil. Also leaking from behind the motor shroud (upper right circle)...a little higher up, most likely where the cylinder meets the bottom part of the motor. I could be wrong about it being gear oil, but it had Stronger odor than the oil from valve area. Solymar

Ok great on the pictures. wow that rocker assy, is jacked, the studs are junk for sure and enjoying a base gasket leak. I hope the metal around those studs is not drawn up preventing even with new studs and gasket to leak.. Time to take that top end down. Good Luck!

Yeah the rocker assembly surprised me too when I saw it. He claims that his torque wrench never clicked at the set amount and kept going til it snapped. I think he’s planning on getting the gasket kit in the next couple of days. As soon as he has it taken apart I’ll let ya know how bad it looks. I’m just glad it wasn’t my scoot lol Solymar

Ive heard this so many times I could get rich on the torque wrench never snapped. He's using a foot pound torque wrench for a Inch Pound Job, The Foot Pound Wrench Adjusted down so low will Not Click, only the experienced will feel a Bump. When ya have to back off so far on a foot Pound torque wrench there is Not Enough Spring Pressure to get that "Snap". He should Not be using a Click Type Foot Pound but a inch pound Beam type till he learns how to use a Torque Wrench. I would Never Sell a Click Type Torque Wrench to somebody that has never used any type of torque wrench before. Over torquing that much he may very well have pulled the metal up around the studs and the Cases are Junk..
Good Luck...

itistheride.boards.net/thread/9610/long-case-short-frame-storyThe "the torque wrenched never snapped" are all over the scooter boards. This Butcher was clueless when anyone tried to help him, he overtorqued his studs over and over till it drew up the metal on the cases and could never get a base gasket to work.

Ouch! Hopefully that’s not what my buddy did. He said he’s got the motor out & was going to start disassembling it tonight. Shouldn’t be long before we find out if he warped it or got really lucky.
