Okay Doc's.
Is it possible that a variator can cause the idle to fluctuate? I changed mine from stock to a so called Racing Variator with 5grams.
I thought it could be the carb but after trying two different ones, I can not get the idle adjusted right. I sounds great until I rev her up 1 time. Then it all goes crazy.

If your problem developed immediately with the variator upgrade then I'd say you have a roller/slider stuck or in at an angle. Also, fluctuating idle is usually a vac leak, could you have bumped a vac line while rooting around? I know I'm all elbos when I'm working. Does it shift OK? Get back, Rich

No Bashan, it does not shift OK. I put the original variator back on and it still revs out of control. It starts out okay sometimes. I take off fine then it starts to idle too high. If I stop at a light the scooter wants to take off without me hitting the gas. I have also found that when I start her up and let her roll backwards, the idle goes up then too.
I have not found any loose vac lines.
Any ideas?

Well since it does not shift ok, are you sure the Variator went on right. The Outer Variator Plate may not be sitted in the splines to hold it in place. If the Variator fan which is your outside part facing you when you take the cvt cover off is not being held by the little splines on the shaft and then you tighten the nut up against it the Face plate will wobble because it is loose. When you put the Variator Fan on it should go onto the splines on the shaft and you should not be able to turn it at all once the splines grab the Variator fan. Then there is a washer that goes on then the Nut. Check that out. Alleyoop

Hey alley,
It's on the shaft just like you say. No wobble at all from the variator.

I just noticed this was a Trike we're talking about. I'm sure Trikes have there own set of bugaboos but some things are undoubtedly similar. You tried another carb so that can't be it. You said your variator is good as are the vac lines. How about the clutch? If it was my scooter at this point I'd pull the clutch off and look around. I'd say the obvious possibilities are grease seeped into the party, bad or broken spring, bad or broken clutch pad. Then again, I don't know squat about Trikes, just floating some balloons. Rich

CrazyDude, Well if the idle is going up and down you have a bad air leak (running Lean) and or your Enricher is getting in the way. Try richen up your Air/Fuel Mixture and see if that helps. At Idle your Clutch is not working unless a pad or pads are stuck outward and engageing the bell. Alleyoop

Bashan, Trikes are just two wheel scooters converted to a trike. All the trikes still have the same frame as the two wheelers. crap even were the Sidestand goes is still on the frame. All they did was build a Frame piece going back to connect the Axle to the frame they built. But everything else is sameo sameo, same Clutch same Cvt as the two wheelers. But instead of the Drive shaft turning the Rear Wheel of a Scooter it turns a SPROCKET with a chain that turns the Sprocket on the Differential on the Axle that carries the two wheels. Alleyoop
