THINGS THAT CAUSE THE GAS GAUGE TO READ EITHER FULL ALL THE TIME OR EMPTY WHEN FULL: 1. Gauge reads EMPTY when its full: This is caused by the CHEAP THIN PLASTIC FLOAT taking on gas and weighing it down to register as EMPTY. 2. Gauge reads FULL when its EMPTY OR ITS ERRATIC: a.The wire that holds the FLOAT is stuck on the plastic pivot in the up position. Probe inside the tank with a small stick or wire and move the wire that holds the Float and see if the gauge needle moves and frees up. But it will probably happen again. b. The plate that rotates up and down and also holds the wire with the Float is loose and wobbles and does not make contact with the resister plate all the time. In this case the Clip that holds the wire on the other side of the platic holder is not tight enough and causes the wire and plate to wobble. I took the clip off and used a small Brass collar with a set screw to keep it nice and tight against the Plastic Holder. In Either Case 1 or 2 to fix it correctly you have to take the Gas Sensor Out. Either order a new one or Fix the one you have. But a new one will be of the same quality and will have the same problems sooner or later. I fixed the one I had so all of the problems of 1 and 2 would be solved. But then the Float leaked and it would read empty most of the time even though it was full or half full. So what I did is get a Brass Sealed Float and hooked it up to a New Wire that I made up. Since the Float is a Sealed Brass Float it will not take on gas anymore. Below is a picture of my New Gas Float. Now Some of the Trikes will Register Full until it is down a gallon or two, it depends on the size of your tank. The reason is because the Pivot Plate that holds the wire with the Float only pivots so much. So when your tank is full the Pivot Plate does not Pivot enough to allow the Float to reach the top of the tank. That means the Float is actually under water as they say and will show full for quite a while until the gas level is low enough that the Float is now actually working and floating on top of the gas. This also holds true when it is reading very close to EMPTY when its Not you may have 2 gallons left and its reading EMPTY. That again is because the Pivot Plate only moves so much up and down. So now the Pivot is at its max in the down position reading empty but you still may have 1-3 gallons left. The gallons left depends on the size of your tank. On my PST150H Trike the tank is almost 5 gallons so mine reads empty and I have almost 3 gallons left. But I fixed that and have it read EMPTY when I have about 1 1/2 gallons left. Alleyoop 1. Brass Float and New Wire: 2. Brass Wheel Collar to Hold Wire and Plate Tight: 3. Float position when registering Full: 4. Float position when registering Empty:

I had a bnought with this . The pivit point was tight . I backed the pressed ring back a bit and it started to move free .

Yea, it is either Tight, Loose or the contacts are worn out, if the later then you will need to get a new one. Alleyoop

can one use a analog ohm meter to measure the resistance on the three wires coming from the sending unit, ?, if yes, what should one expect to read in ohms normally, also is there w wiring diagram for the sending unit, which color wire goes where. I need to deter me if its the sending unit that is bad, or the Gage its-self. thank you.

I cannot answer ohms question because have never tested it and 99.9 percent of the time is the FLOAT itself and nothing else. Either the Cheap plastic float does not exist anymore or the arm is loose or tight by the swivel plate. If the sensor swivel plate rubbing arms are broke or the float is gone you will need a new one.
There is no wiring diagram for the sending unit, hell there isn't a wiring diagram for the scott let along individual parts. But do not even bother with that, take the sensor out and turn the key on and move the float up and down and see if it registers making sure the swivel plate is touching the resister plate. Then you can check if the Swivel plate still has about 4 rubbing fingers that make contact with the resister plate. ALso check the wires on the gas gauge one may have come loose.
One thing you can do is get a piece of wire and make a hook on the end and stick it in the tank and grab the float wire and move it up and down and see if the gauge moves. Alleyoop

I just don't bother with the guage and fill her up every 80 t0 120 miles. Works good on breaks when on trips too...

Hello all, I purchased a used PST150-H on Saturday. It was from a dealer that is liquidating his inventory. The starter was not working so I pulled some the seat and some body parts to work on top the engine. I kept smelling old stale gas. With a flashlight I could see that the fuel tank was leaking st the fuel sensor. I pulled some more body parts to get at the sensor to check the gasket. Upon pulling the sensor I found that the float split in two and came off the lever arm. After removing the tank (no small chore) and then spending more than an hour fishing the old float out I reinstalled the tank. I put and old carb float on the end of the arm, reinstalled the sensor and refilled the tank. After letting it sit overnight it leaked again. This time was able to see the that the leak was coming through the sensor alongside the three wires. I am getting a new sensor to end this headache. This trike only has 300 miles on it but it has been sitting for a long time with a full tank of gas that turned yellow and stinky. The carb was gummed up also. I haven't ridden it yet but I am sure having fun taking it apart piece by piece. BTW, I plan to only use unleaded premium with no ethanol. Jeff

Good choice in running non ethanol fuel. This write up is a prime example of what ethanol does to rubber parts. Jim/Owner Rapid Repair
