-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This might be hard to explain, but I'll try. (I'm new to scooters). It is a Rakatak MD 150T-6 (2006). JMStar is on the label too.
I just noticed this rattle. I'm not sure if it is coming from the variator or the clutch. It doesn't matter if if it is at idle or revved up under load.
My next step is to take off the belt and start it to try to isolate where the sound is coming from.
I'll get a better idea of where it is coming from later, but thought I'd start a thread in case it is something obvious.
(On a side note, coincidence? I'm missing a screw right in front of the CVT cover near that boot, and sounds like something is rattling around there).
Thanks,
Jon

Thanks, Jon Well Jon, if it's a Rakatak I think it's supposed to make a rattling noise....... . If it still does it after you take off I wouldn't think it's the variator, it engages with higher RPM and tightens up. Does the noise change with speed? Does it operate OK? Maybe we can get someone on this with some extensive CVT experience. Hang tight, we'll work on it. By the way, Dr. JR has a screw loose also but that doesn't stop him from answering questions. Rich

Thanks Rich, you can delete the other post now.
The scooter drives and sounds great, but the clatter seems to happen at anything above idle.
I had trouble getting the belt off, and wanted to ride so I put the CVT cover back on. I'll check it out again soon and post back here on my findings.
Thanks,
Jon

OK, done. I do want to know where that rattle is coming from when you figure it out. There's one on my wife's Bashan 150cc that I CANNOT find, aarrgghh! Yet it runs perfect, so I guess it can't be that heinous. Rich

Your noise probably IS coming from the CVT area, but once in a while, the muffler will begin to "decompose" from the inside. As pieces come loose inside, they can make almost the same sound as something loose inside the CVT cover.
Those sounds are funny (like a beeper or cell phone ring) and sometimes come from the other side of the engine, and can fool you. Worth checking out anyway...

Interesting info. It could be coming from the other side too?
Its a rain day today, so I'll be in the garage and hopefully get some info.

I think it is internal. The more I listen to it, it sounds more like a knock than a clatter. I took off the variator completely, and same sound. Then I removed the cover that is over the fan on the other side, but same noise. I thought I'd drain the oil and look for metal shavings, but didn't find any?? Nothing at all in the filter?? Hmm? Not the clutch, variator, or fan. I did develop an oil leak too, but not sure where. Any ideas? I'm rather disappointed right now. I was hoping for something simple. Thanks, Jon

Check the exhaust pipe bolts that hold it to the engine. Our Xingyue XY150T lost one and it then made a clatter noise.

Yes, I did a valve job not long after I bought it. The other day I pulled the valve cover, inspected the valves, and added a little gasket seal around the edges of the cover. Still leaks, but I need to take more body parts off to really see in there, but it seems it was near the head. My buddy has one of these, and it worked really well. I think I'll pick one up: They are $5.99 at Harbor Freight, and would come in handy around the garage. I'm off to get some oil, and take a closer look at things. Maybe try to get a good video of the noise to post here. In the end, I may end up needing to do a rebuild...just like the other post titled Matrix rebuild. Jon

Well I can tell you that mechanics stethoscope is fantastic, you can pinpoint any noises you hear. I got one last year and it has come in handy. Alleyoop

Yes, that's the one. I was skeptical at first, but they work.
Some info:
I took a quick listen today, I hear the knock everywhere but it seemed loudest on the starter?? I'll take some more time and see if I can pin point the knock. I'm not a mechanic at all either, this is new to me.

If its Knocking its not good. put the long bar on it and put it around the engine underneath, were the oil is or right under the shaft that your Variator goes on. That is the crankshaft which has your piston attached to it. If its knocking there its not good. Are you sure its a knock and not clatter, clatter, clatter or something that sounds like marbles flying around? Different sounds point to different things. So if you can be more specific of the sound your hearing that would help. Alleyoop
