I have used Ubuntu, as well as a number of other Linux distros. They are great. It's too bad that the software I need for school won't operate on Linux.

I have not had windows on a computer since 10/2001 when win XP came out. the last 3 years or so I have used PCLINUX. I have a netbook with ubuntu netbook on it. I really don't care for ubuntu but for the netbook it worked out good. I don't have any idea what i would do if I was forced to use windows for school or work but being retired and all, f I was forced to use windows at home I would take my computer to the dump. I positively hate microshaft/windows/gates and all it stands for. It has been nine years since I have been forced to use an anti virus to protect gates "wonderful" software. john

the reason your computer is slow is because you have a lot of program installed in your pc,working simultaneously as you turn on your comp. if you wanna see all the processes going on in your computer here's how: press and hold ctrl and Alt--then click on delete.. next screen will give you list...choose the "task manager". and if you wanna delete programs: go to control panel--then click on "add/delete hardware. be careful on deleting programs/just delete the ones you are not using anymore. good luck... waiver: please do this in your own free will. Actually, if its a program that you use, but only occasionally and it has a startup process..ie the program starts when you turn on the computer, then instead of removing it, do the following: 1. left click on the start menu 2. click in the run box 3. type "msconfig" (without the quotaton marks) 3a.. Click ok 4. click on the startup tab in the window that opens. (this will show a list of programs that will start when you first turn on the computer) 5. uncheck the program that you do not want starting when you turn on the computer. 6. click apply 6a. click ok 7. restart the computer Now as you go through the list and some of the items do not clearly show what program they belong to, then you can google the startup name, or the file name in the Alaunch section of the window, to determine what program it belongs to. If you are unsure if you should uncheck it, then dont uncheck it. And as Luke stated, use this at your own risk/will. Edit: The steps I list above, will prevent those programs from starting when you first turn on the computer, thus freeing up some of the resources and speeding up the computer. You can still use the program, as it will still be installed on the computer

Wife is fixing the comput as we speek. I tried to call home from work and got a busy signal every time I tried. So, I had to call on my cell to get ahold of her. She said that she hasn't been on the phone all day. She said that she has deleted 7000 files from my sight and is still working on it. Is there something I should be looking at with the phone jack ? There are 4 lines hooked into the main house jack.

Sometimes overloading the phone jack will cause a problem. If you can unplug some of the lines for awhile and test it, that should tell you if it's the problem. A fixed amount of power comes through that jack. If there are too many phones hooked to it, it could keep them from ringing. If unplugging some of the lines doesn't help, call the phone company to get further instructions.
