Broken Belt

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After 100 miles of riding I put the dust cover over the belt on my Icebear Trike 150-9. I got about 7 miles from home while enjoying the ride and I started to slow down. The engine raced but I was not moving. So I walked back about 2 miles to a phone and called for help. Got the trike trailered back to the house and found I had cremated the belt. I mean the belt melted down to nothing. It took out the pull start gear head that bolts on to the variator nut, it rounded off the teeth of the aluminum gear; the variator is toast and the clutch has melted rubber all over the plates that squeeze the belt. Something jammed and broke the belt allowing it to sling hot rubber all over everything. So I will be ordering a new variator and sliders, clutch, belt and pull start piece. Has any other trike owner had a problem like this? I was able to clean off the engine shaft that the variator bolts to. It was coated with rubber and would not allow the variator teeth to engage the shaft... I had ridden over 100 miles with the variator and belt replaced and only put the dust cover on 20 miles at the most. The CVT got so hot you could not touch it. And the rubber melted that is pretty hot... Any one have any ideas what is jamming or causing the problem??? How do you remove rubber from the variator and clutch plates??? Thanks Triker98304 Attachments:

Triker, What Dust Cover are you talking about? Do you mean the CVT cover? Also what brand of Belt did you have in there? I only use BANDO and or GATES POWERLINK link belts. I have almost 5000 on my Trike and never have had a problem with belts(KNOCK ON WOOD) Alleyoop Alleyoop

Broken Belt

It was a Bando, Kevalar 743 20 32 from Scrappydog. And I only have 750 miles on my trike. The CVT cover was installed for only the last 20 miles. The melted rubber coated the variator and clutch plates note how black they are in the picture. Any idea what will disolve the rubber so I can clean them up and keep them for spares? I am checking to find out what caused the problem before I reassemble the trike do not want to keep buying parts. And keep breaking down...Those long walks are not good. Thanks for the reply. Broken Belt

The last number on the belt they sent was 32 not 30. Have you changed the clutch on your trike? I got the "performance clutch and I am thinking about going back to the original clutch and main spring, the 1000 instead of the 1500 RPM spring. All I see is one mark on the clutch slider. Nothing that indicates it jammed. The variator is all black and doesnot show a problem. But literally the belt melted. Any ideas? Triker98304

Triker, Well if its a Short Case it ONLY takes a 743-20-30, Which belt did you get at scrappydogs that the last number was a 32? I sent you a PM as well to try and explain the belt issue. I have not put the Performance Clutch in yet. But I got the 1000 Contra Spring and not the 1500. Also the OEM Clutchs usually have Contra springs in the 700-800 range so a 1000 Contra Spring is supposedly just a little stiffer than the OEMs. I took my Old Clutch and took off the Actual Clutch and Contra Spring and have it all setup with the Performance Clutch which has more material on the Pads. Each Brake Pad has about 1/2 more material than the OEM Pads. So that means better grip on the Bell since more pad grabs the Bell. Alleyoop

omg, maybe because trikes are too heavy and as you accelerate cvt put too much tension on the belt and it burst into pieces. imo trikes should have a special type of clutch system to avoid these kinds of doom./or maybe that's typical mandarin belt.

It will happen if you get cheap belts, not all belts are made of quality material. That is why you see a lot of belts for dirt cheap and that is what is going to happen they cannot take the heat and or stress. My trike weighs 353lbs and I weigh 180lbs. I have not had a belt break on me yet and I do not baby the trike I crank on it on flats and uphills. Alleyoop

The belt was suppose to be kevalar... But that did not stop the belt from melting all over the clutch, varator, rollers and gum up the variator shaft. I basically got a cheap replacement clutch and variator. I can put the "performance clutch and 1500 RPM spring on and at least ride the trike for now. Can't affprd to tear up too many more parts like that... Does any of you scooter mechanics know what would cause the belt to break up and melt all over the case???(See the pic above) The bearing on the clutch plates seems ok. Of course the variator section was toaast and stuck inside the CVT cover on the variator/engine shaft. Triker98304

Triker98304, A lot of people do not like Kevalar Belts and the reason is they do NOT stretch. And you had a 1500 Contra Spring which makes the Variator work a lot harder to get the Clutch Pulley to open up for more speed. Also the belt Should be a 743-20-30 and Not a 743-20-32. The 743- =Length the 20=Width the 32=Angle of the Teeth. So the 32 did not help the situation because that is not the angle of the Pulley Faces. If the last number was smaller say 29.5 or something smaller than 30 that means less material of the side of the belt is actually making contact with the sides of the Pulley Face until of course it wears in. Also I looked at the site and only found one 743-20-30 belt for $14.95, and for that price I would question the quality of the belt. You never did answer if that is the Belt You Ordered. Just a suggestion get a Gates PowerLink or Gates Powerlink Preminum Belt From www.scooterbelt.com/ they are reasonable and I have bought belts from them with no occurring problems. my .02 cents Alleyoop

Alleyoop The belt was the one from Scrappydog, it was a Bando brand belt, can not read much else on the melted parts.. I will try the belts web site you provided. I have put about everyting back to stock except the CDI, coil, plug. Hopeully the stock belt will last this time. We got about 2 1/2 feet of snow last night. So it will be a while beefore I can dig out. These trikes are not much of a snow plow. Did you get a new mp3 player to go on your trike? HAVE A GREAT TURKEY DAY. Triker98304

Triker98304, Just for comparisons, same thing happened to another scooter guy using the wrong belt. He had a 8??-20-32 belt and the 32 is the angle of the teeth on the belt and it ripped apart like yours. www.scooterdoc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=150cc&action=display&thread=2422&page=2Well I would not replace the CDI,COIL or Plug unless the scoot is not running good with those parts, those parts just give Spark to the Plug and no rev limiter. No I am still waiting on the player for the trike. I think they forgot about it and I am not the type of person to bring it up:) But I will be having a 62mm BBK put in sometime this winter which will almost make the motor a 180cc, I think or something like that. Alleyoop Thanks for the info. I will be ordering another belt in the near future. Have frun building the 180cc. I saw the 200cc for $500 advertized by Scrappydog...And MBE offers a crate engine with lots of options. You might check that out. I am checking the 200cc engines out on the web. Maybe the Scooterdoc forum could get a multi unit discount if there is interest. I certainly would consider the new enine. It's onlly money right. Here's hoping the Hoilidays are great for all you scooter guys and gals. Triker98304
