Ok, I am so frustrated right now. I am usually very calm. I got my Dash 50cc from Green Earth Scooters .com. (3 weeks old may-be). Did a full PDI, changed engine oil and gear oil, and switched the spark plug to an NGK(even though their site says they come with an NGK plug). So it was fine and scooting happily for the first week or so. Then I noticed when I was cruising with a more open throttle, it bogged down. I talked to them about it and they said to clean the carb. I was going to get to it the next weekend. I filled the tank up at BP with premium and added full/carb cleaner to the tank. I got about a mile away and it dies. WOuld start right up, then die. So I took the carb apart and cleaned it out-twice to make sure all was good. Put it back on, it dies after starting for a second. AND! gas was leaking out of the side l shaped hose. So I take it back apart to make sure the float was good. It was good, and it still leaked gas out of the hose. So I took it to a local scoot mechanic. He said my carb was bad, or rather the diaphram was bad and causing the fuel to leak and over fill like that. I bought a carb from him for $40 and put it on when I got home. No more gas leak out of the side....BUT, it dies again after starting. Did that a few times, and now it won't start at all! I even changed the plug again. I just don't understand and am getting very frustrated and angry actually. I don't usually even get angry at anything, but this has me feeling VERY frustrated. Can someone please give me advice on what to do!!!!? It would be greatly appreciated! Also, my email is ikabaud22@yahoo.com if you want to reply there. I'll check here as well though. Man, I need to get my scooter back on the road. Is this common for a new scooter? Thanks, Tim

Tim Do you have a kill switch ? Have you pulled the plug wire and check for spark ? Perhaps you put too much carb cleaner in the tank ? when you say you cleaned the old carb ,. did you pull the jets out and stick a thin wire through the holes? Is your gas tank above your carb ?

Ikabaud22, You are not supposed to put Carb Cleaner in your Gas Tank. You are supposed to use products such as Sta-Bil or Seafoam and only 1OZ per Gallon. So if you did dump a bunch of Carb Cleaner you need to Drain your Tank and put in Fresh Gas. Do that first and then if it still does not want to stay started we can look at other Fuel and or Spark problems. Alleyoop

Man, Thank you for your responses! I was wondering if that fuel/carb cleaner had something to do with it. I will drain the tank and put new fuel in it, and see where I am at. What is the easiest way to drain all that fuel? Ok, that was a silly question! I was just so frustrated after yesterday. Drained the fuel and now on the way to get some gas and see what happens!

Ok, I drained the gas, put new gas in from BP and added some Stabil to it. However, I added the Stabil first-which was probably stupid. It sounded like it wanted to start for a second and now just cranks over. I took the spark plug out and checked for spark with it in the wire and it has spark. When I crank it over, it does not seem to be getting any fuel into the filter (the white translucent one).
I don't know what to do and it is driving me nuts! I hope I also didn't strip the plug socket. I just don't know what to do! Someone please help me! Arghhhh!

Ikabaud22, Where is your gas tank above the Carb or below the Carb? There should be a VACUUM HOSE connected to the Fuel Pump or Petcock. If the Gas tank is above the Carb you have a Petcock if the Tank is Below the Carb you have a Fuel Pump.
But whatever you have disconnect the Fuel Line by the Carb and get a glass or something to catch the fuel. Then Disconnect the Vacuum Line by the Carb going to the Pump. Now SUCK on the VACUUM LINE and FUEL should come out of the Fuel Line into the Container. Also crank open your Fuel Cap it may have to much pressure in it.
Its ok to put in the Ozs of Sta-Bil or Seafoam in, as you put in the Gas it will mix up. Are you sure the Fuel Filter is in correct and NOT backwards. The Wider Part of a Fuel Filter should Point to the Carb Side. Alleyoop

I found the vaccum line. The one connected to the bigger hose in front of the carb right? When I sucked on that, gas did go into the cup. Also, This is a new carb that I put on it. It doesn't have numbers on it, but he said it was for a 50cc scooter and everything looks pretty much the same. I checked for spark-go, I checked for compression by putting my finger over the plug hole-go, and did the fuel check as Alleyoop said-go. It cranks with the electric start-it just won't start.
This is driving me crazy. My scooter is three weeks old! I have no idea what to do next. Alleyoop, any advice you can keep giving me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much Alleyoop for your advice thus far as well.
Thanks for everyone that responded today.I think I am going to put it back together for the night and RELAX. Because right now I want to take my scooter up in the air and just drop it and watch it explode....or rather drop it on the place I got it from. I know I will get it working...with the help of this great form I found! Thanks.

I have a 50cc scooter in my garage and when I got it and it wouldn't start everyone said fuel flow. I tried fooling around for two days with the carb, lines, everything. I had spark but it wouldn't start. Know what the problem was? The plug at the CDI was cruddy. After yanking on it and putting in a new spark plug the scooter started. Yup, the scooter I bought for $260 from a guy who couldn't get it running is now a runner. Carburetors seldom go bad, electrical plugs are not quite so faithful. Go through your ignition circuit and unplug and replug all the wires. Or else do what I do when that scooter gives me trouble. Punch the fender where the CDI is. It will run like a charm.

Hey guys... Ok, So you guys should get a kick and a laugh out of this one. The WHOLE weekend I spent trying to figure out what the heck was wrong with my scooter getting frustrated. So today I got up and stripped it down before work and had a guy I found take a look at it as well. You know what, OPERATOR ERROR! I had the fuel hose and the vaccum hose on the carb backwards! THAT WAS IT. Ok, I am ready for a bashing......Anyway, I have a new carb on there, the scoot mechanic said the old one was bad. The upside is I really got to know my scoot!
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice!

Now you should have almost as good a working knowledge of your particular scoot, as the average dealer out there selling them. If it runs perfect out of the box, and no PDI gets run, then when it does go south, you would have no idea and little to go on, to enact the fix. Just knowing which lines and parts are which, and where they go, what they do, along with how to start trouble shoot diagnostics, will go a long way towards keeping a scoot running and out of the repair shop. I replaced and reran Vacuum and Fuel lines during my PDI and got a vacuum line too close to a threaded bolt post. Wore a hole out fast and would not start after about 300 miles. The few days spent lining that out, along with the PDI, and Scooter Doc gods. taught me more about scooters, than the local shops around here surely ever wanted me to know.

Thanks, and I agree. I am very thankful for everyone on this forum and glad to be a part of it! I have already learned a great deal by reading and taking apart my scoot.
