So, here's my status as of yesterday. I pulled the starter motor off and that sprocket looked fine. Now, I need to open the crank case. My question: Do I need a flywheel puller or any other special tools? I removed the fan, but I could not get the rest apart.

You know when you posted about the metal filings in the oil? I think you also said something about the piston rod feeling a little loose. I wonder if that's part of the problem. I never tried to pull a flywheel so I can't help ya there. Good luck! Well, it doesn't have alot of play, so I don't know if that's it. I'm not going to find out until I can crack the crankcase. Has anyone on this forum ever done it? Google isn't providing me much insight and I'd love to see a video. I'm just afraid that I'm getting to a point where I'm not going to have the right tools in my toolbox. But... I'm not ready to give up and go to a pro just yet.

If I had everything off, splitting the case wouldn't be too bad. I know how to make use of the gentle persuasion of rubber mallet. My issue is that there are still components on each side of the crankshaft that need to come off. Look at these pics: (sorry, my phone doesn't take good pics in low light conditions.)

I'd get a new motor and use the old one to rebuild, learn, and have a spare.....but that's me. I found some pics of GY6's one with a disc, they look different, what do you think?

I'm still debating what to do. I still want to crack my case open before I make my final decision.
As far as the pictures go, mine is more like the middle one. The one on the right is different, because its a for 16" Wheel (I have 13" wheels). It also has the disc brake integrated into the case. The disc brake on mine is on the opposite side (the muffler side) of the wheel.

I must be crazy. I've been weighing my options of new motor vs rebuild (or both) and I've been doing alot of thinking about the future of my scooter lately, my brain revisited an old thought.... the possibilty of coverting it to a 250. If I could find a cheap donor bike, like something that's been dropped or doesn't have a title, I could probably work out a deal with some people at work to help me fab the up the needed motor mounts. Something like this: orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/1698101573.htmlSince we've moved recently, my new commute to work isn't as small scooter friendly. It can be done no problem (and I'm planning to do it once my bike is repaired anyway), but I could really use something that's highway capable. Ya know, the whole shortest distance between two points is a straight line bit...

I'm pretty sure 250's and 150's are mutually exclusive. A 250 is not a GY6 at all. Unless you're really good at fabrication, I don't think that is an option. How much do you want to spend? This guy can sell you an awesome engine that would fit, and he clould talk you through it. His name is Steve: www.monstergy6.com/product_motors.htmI'm mean a G and it screams! Rich

I brought this idea up on another undisclosed forum awhile ago and actually got some input from the Good Dr. JR. It'll probably remain a project for a future rainy day. I was just reminded of it when I saw that Helix on Craigslist and had a crazy impulse, which I'm a little prone to. Just ask my wife. I figure if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Motor swaps are common place in the auto world. The craziest thing I've ever heard of was putting the motor from a Hayabusa into a SmartCar. Want to talk about something that would FLY! I think that rainy day will come when I have another everyday scooter, which will hopefully be sooner than later. I'd say within the next year.
My scoot would certainly scream with a motor from MonsterGY6! But, at this time that's more than I want to spend.
I've talked to Rich over at Scrappy Dog Scooters and he actually has a 161QMK motor, same as mine, which he says I'll have no problems using my rear disc brake with. I'm seriously considering it, since its more in my budget.
Before I make my final decision, I'm going to open that crank case.... this weekend.

I've been waiting to see how yours turns out (I'm the one with the engine rattle). If I have major problems with mine, I'm thinking about doing the big bore upgrade.
Lots of $ though, not sure if I want to. My 150cc is fine for what I wanted it for, but I think I want a 250 next time.

Jon, I'd like to think that our problems our different. Since, if memory serves, you drained your oil and didn't find any metal shavings. You might be lucky and just have it be in your top end!
My next one will definitely be at least a 250. The location of the new house just calls for light highway duty from time to time. I know I've said it before, but I've really got my eyes on a TMAX. I hope to soon be in the financial situation to pull that off. We'll see.
I'm not going to be able to do anything until Sunday at the earliest, since I'll be out town tonight and tomorrow. If I end up with a new motor, I'll probably wait until I get paid at the end of the month. Getting one paycheck a month sucks.

Yea, I'm hoping its not inside the motor. Right now I think it is the magneto rotor, but won't know for a while. Good luck with yours, hope it goes well.

I could have sworn I posted this yesterday. I tried again to remove the flywheel so I could crack the crankcase open. Failed miserably and broke down and ordered a flywheel puller from ebay. Free priority mail shipping from south Florida should mean that I'll have it Tuesday. Hopefully.
Also, this weekend, I discovered why my speedometer quit working. I just need to replace the speedometer cable, since the cable broke where there was a slightly awkward bend. Probably my fault, since one of the tie down brackets had fallen off and I had simply secured it with a zip tie. I'm glad that was the problem, because I did not want to have to replace the entire gauge cluster. The only place I've found a factory replacement for it has a list price of $708.86.

I had to order a speedometer cable too. Check this link: cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=270522242666&view=all&tid=550387619017 Check to make sure they have the right one. The ebay sellers name is scrappydogscooters. I'm very pleased with my order. I ordered it Saturday around 4-5pm and it arrived today (monday) via USPS first class mail! Less than 2 days to my door. $9.00 including shipping. On the other hand, my order from Motopartsmax.com is still sitting in CA. UPS ground and it will be 8 days shipping if I'm lucky. It took them 3-4 days just to process my order. Jon

Scrappy is in our Vendors section. He is Rick Main, a very nice guy. If you need help you can call him and discuss what parts you may or may not need, no pressure. He's also nice enough to contribute to our GY6 code thread in Tech. Rich I had no idea! Thanks Rick and Rich.

Yeah, I mentioned that I've been talking to Rick at ScrappyDogScooters about my motor. He has basically a factory replacement for me if I want it. Its a little on the high end of what I wanted to pay though, but then its a 170cc with the oil cooler and not the cheap 150cc's I've been looking at on ebay. The link you posted for a speedometer cable doesn't seem to work for me, but I'll talk to Rick about it. At a minimum, I think I'm going to get the speedo cable and a new air filter from him, and probably whatever jets I'll need for the carb. Turns out my flywheel puller didn't come yesterday, because that's when it got shipped. I should hopefully get it today. I'm not going to get home until about 9pm tonight, but that won't stop me from trying to get the flywheel off. I'm so close to having the crankcase open. UPDATE: Still no love from USPS. Must be tomorrow.
