I went out today and picked up a new battery. It was only $25 so I was impressed as hell at the price. I put in the acid and charged it at 2 amps for an hour like instructed. Put the battery in and now the starter spins but does not turn the motor. It spins but no cranky the motor. I looked inside the starter hole before putting in the starter and the inside gear looked good with no teeth missing. So the question is what is going on and how do I fix? I assume I have to take the cover off and check the other gears and how big of a pain is that? Lance Duke 250.

wow. I am thinking if the starter gear is exactly the same size. I am thinking that maybe the oneway bearing/Starter Clutch is shot.

tommy,,are you talking about the starter solenoid??...these types of centrifugal starters sometimes needs some cleaning and greasing...the power could be enough but some dirt or old sticky grease might be preventing the gear to throw out and connect to the cvt teeth. if you open the cvt cover ,you 'll understand what i'm talking about...that was my problem before when i had my 50cc scoot.

The Lance 250 uses a starter clutch instead of a solenoid. Here is an excerpt from the Helix manual showing the internals of the starter system. mpsracing.net/helix-manual/10-00.htmlThis chapter will show you how to get into this area to check out the starter system.

Well got it figured out. I pulled the starter out again (gettin pretty good at it) and I stuck a screwdriver into the hole and moved the gear with the screwdriver. The one way the gear turned easily and I am thinking that I was screwed. Then I turned it the other way and it was tight like it was trying to turn the motor over. I grounded the starter and hit the button and Shazam it was turning the wrong way. When I put the starter together, I rotated the magnets 180 degrees causing the starter to spin backwards. Turned the magnets the right way, reinstalled it and it turned over the motor. Now, unfortunately the battery only turned it over 3 or 4 times before it quit. I would suspect it is because the starter is not in good shape and I have another one on the way, and second, the battery was not fully charged. I am recharging the battery now and with any luck, I will get it turning well enough to get some gas into the carb and get it to fart. I am stoked aout riding this spring.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We have IGNITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After recharging the battery, I pulled the plug out to reduce the compression and spun the motor over. I replaced the plug, sprayed some gas in the back of the carb, hit the starter and she fired right up. Stayed running too, not like it used up what I sprayed in and died. I am still going to clean out the carb and replace the fuel with fresh but that is for warmer weather. I am now an official 250 owner.

Latest update, Pulled out the carb and took it apart. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. The idle jet was partially plugged so I cleaned everything spic and span. I decided today to put it back in and just as a tip, since there are 4 hoses attached to it, I took a picture of it, send it to myself and printed it out, that way I could refer to it when re-installing the carb so that all the hoses were attached correctly. I also decided to put the new starter and solenoid in that came the other day. Got everything installed and it spun over much better and quicker due to the new starter using less volts and it fired right up. It also idled much smoother probably due to cleaning the carb. Right now I think the best thing to do is to ride it since it has not been ridden in such a long time.
Now that I got it running for the time being, I started noticing how DIRTY it is. I can't wait to do some maintenance and cleaning and make it look pretty again.
