Every unbalance a load of laundry? Then you know that sound. Well I am getting a sound from the rear clutch area. So I pulled off the CVT cover started it up and the belt runs smooth along the top a little rough on the bottom but no signs of wear. Stopped engine and removed the bell from the pulley. Looked fine to me, so I replaced it and started engine again. The same sound. Now I'm thinking it might be a bearing.
The funny thing about this is that if I lower the idle speed to say 1400 it runs quiet as a mouse. Give it gas and there goes the washing machine.
Any ideas will be helpful.

I love your new office Doc.
Ok, lets go through your list.
What about if you are riding it at a higher RPM? If it is making a noise I can't hear it, but I always wear a helmet.
Did you inspect the clutch pads? Yes, they look good no dust inside of of bell.
How about gear oil? Gear oil is fine.
Excessive pad dust? No dust, and there was no belt wear either. I had the cover off when I changed to sliders and that was 2000 miles ago. Inside of cover and bell housing is clean.
The clutch has two sets of bearings the back one being a needle bearing, are they free or need grease? OK, you have me here. I didn't remove the clutch. Just slid it out a bit with belt on.

having said something about the "washing machine" syndrome...the first thing that comes to my mind are the roller weights,,,try to open your cvt and investigate the roller weights for some chips, dings, deformities etc... a slight imbalance will cause your scooter to vibrate at med-to higher speed....some riders including me even use a digital weighing scale just to make sure my 8 rollers are in perfect balance before i install it,,an imbalance roller weights can cause vibration that can eventually ruin the central bearings. don't wait for it to happen$$$$$...good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Luke, My first thought was the variator, but after removing the cover the noise was certainly from the clutch area.
This morning I took out for a good ride and the warmer the engine gets the quieter it sounds. Stopped at a red light and I could hardly hear any noise coming from the clutch. I tried to listen as I reached 30 mph and up, but to me I can't hear a thing. For sure when the engine is cold the sound is much louder.

Doc, so I am removing the entire clutch from the scooter to lube the front and back bearings? Also remove fan from variator?

OK, when I remove the bell there is that huge nut which holds down the contra spring. What should I be looking for to remove with a knife? With the clutch off and in the back is the needle bearing exposed? One last question is it possible to keep the belt in place while doing this. I know I need to remove the fan, but I've had problems getting the pulley pulled out so the belt will drop.

good point,if those needle bearings dried out of grease it'll be a little serious problem,,$$$...now with the clutch in place move it up and down and check for wobble or play..if it dried out of grease either the bearing or the final trans drive shaft is damaged, hope not.
and no,you don't need to remove the Big nut holding the torque spring..leave that alone,,that isn't the problem. your task is to check the clutch's inner and outer bearings if still ok or shot....and also check the drive shaft if the surface that touches the needle bearing is still smooth,,if not...jiz you need to replace it brotha!

I know the contra spring isn't removed. What I need to know in relationship of that nut what needs to be removed with a knife to lube the front clutch bearing.

Well what sounds like the clutch was now the variator. Here are two pictures of what's left of it. Any suggestions on what is savable or replace the whole thing. Need to something ASAP. The only damage I can see is the 4 clips. Sliders look good but need cleaning as does the inside of the variator.

Well some good news the only damage was to the 4 clips. 3 out of 4 were destroyed. I cleaned up the variator and there was no damage to it or to the sliders. The belt looks brand new and it has 2500 miles on it. No doubt Gates makes the best belts. I ordered new clips from Absolutely Scooters and within a few days I should be back on the road. I was certain the noise was coming from the clutch. Just shows what you think you hear maybe coming from somewhere else.

You can try and clean it up, and see how it comes out also clean the weights and see if they do not have flat spots on them. As for the Slider bushings they may be hard to find sold seperately. Maybe clean up the variator and all the parts and order new Weights which will come with the Slider Bushings. Alleyoop

Alley, Absolutely Scooters has just the clips and I just received a tracking number. The 8 sliders are not damaged and all is cleaned up.

Speedracer, FANTASTIC!!! That sure saved you a lot of money not needing a new Variator, for those 250s they are a little pricey if I remember correctly.i I should have known they might have them, I had a hard time finding Rocker arm adjusting screws and lock nuts and they had them. Most dealers where selling the whole thing Rocker Arms with them on. Alleyoop

Alley I sure lucked out on this one. I figured at best I would need to purchase 8 new sliders to get the clips, but they sell the clips as well. A variator is expensive for a 250 and I sure didn't want to shell that much out at this time.

I ordered my Dr Pulley V or U slides from Absolutely Scooters on Saturday and received them on Tuesday. Now that was fast. I did notice a change in the slides on the 250 54B it takes a S7 slide which has metal inside of the slide. The ones I was sent had the same number S7, however it didn't have any metal inside of the slide and it was a not as heavy or thick as the ones I had to replace.
