Hello all,
I have a friend who has a new 2011 BMS Heritage 150cc. It is leaking gas. I thought that the drain screw may have fallen out but was told that the emissions canister will need to be replaced if the fuel filter is wet?
Just wonder if you guys could help us identify this part and where would it be on the Heritage 150cc scooter? Also, we are praying it is an easy fix. The part is covered on his warranty.
Only about 45 miles on scooter.
Thanks so much
Tonya

From your description I'm thinking the vapor canister got flooded with fuel. If enough gets in there it'll start leaking out one of the vents. The canister is supposed to trap gas fumes off of the tank and absorb them into a charcoal medium. The canister can get flooded by overfilling the gas tank past the canister vent tube. There's supposed to be a check valve to stop the gas but it often fails. Also, if the bike gets laid over the check valve fails and gas pours into the canister and saturates it. It then must be replaced. Here is a picture of my retro Znen so it should be similar to the BMS:
The filler tube extends way above the tank vent and folks almost invariably try to "filler up to the top!". Then the gas pushes down through the vent to to the vapor canister. Also, as I said, if the guy, ahem, took a little spill the check valve allows the contents of the gas tank into the canister. I took my canister off and use the hose as the tank vent. Since your doing warranty work you probably can't do that. Replace the canister and run a loop on the tank vent hose up above the filler cap and back down. That way the gas won't run into the canister. Or, if your good with metal work, move the vent hose connection up to the top of the filler tube. Rich

Hi Rich,
Thanks again for the information regarding the vapor vent. One quick question and this may be a not so smart question, but I am a bit confused. When you stated that you took your canister off and use the hose as the tank vent, excatly how is that done? Am I wrong to assume that you just removed the vapor canister and leave the hoses hanging? Sorry, just not sure.
Thanks Tonya
