I live on a small barrier Island. It is 3/4 mile deep by 4 miles wide. After I pull out of my drive way I have 1 mile to first turn. Then straight shot off of the Island to my work, 5 miles. Total of 6 miles. I have a new taotao50 with 800kms on it. I have been running all out, wot from home to work. What I want to know; Is this good for the lil 49cc engine. Is it better to vary your speed/rpm a lil or can most stock 50cc scooters take wot. Any input is appreciated

I have a 150cc scoot and I run for many mile WOT all the time, mine has over 2030 miles ( 3267kms )on it now.
My suggestion is that you be using a very high grade 4 stroke Motorcycle 4T oil designed for air cooled engines, I am using an oil made by Lucas in mine now but there are many others that are good as well, Castrol, Amsoil, Valvoline, Yamaha and other major motorcycle makers in a 10w-30 or 10w-40 grade.
The oil is the life blood of these little high reving engines so it is very important that it be of a very high quality and changed fairly regular to keep the protecting from the heat & pressures of the high RPM's at its optimal level, alsio make sure to check your valves settings here pretty soon if you haven't already, that is another critical point that needs to be kept right on these little screamers.
I wish you and that scoot long life......Peace

They are designed to run at long stretches at 80% of throttle and 100% briefly. Having said that I run mine at 100% a lot more than 80. Is it going to shorten the engine's life hammering it at 100%? Of course, but there's no way to tell how much for sure. The way most of mine are built (Chinese) I'd say the engine is the strongest link. I'd be willing to bet something else will ultimately trash the bikes and I'll have an extra engine sitting there. JMO, Rich

Running WOT is not necessarily a bad thing. It all depends what the rpms are. If the engine runs at 7500 rpm at WOT while the redline is 8500 rpm, then that should not be a problem. The crank bearings are the weak link when running at redline or above. Obviously, the weight of the rider, how well the engine/variator is tuned, riding up and down hills and wind direction are all factors as to whether or not to use WOT. Rpm's are what you should be watching regardless of your throttle position. I know that both my scoots will go into redline on a flat road unless there is a strong headwind. So I adjust the throttle to stay at no more the 90% redline for long distances.

The red line should be 7800rpm on a standard GY6 150cc... this is where most CDIs are capped...sometimes at 8000. Not certain how accurate the tachs are either...
The 250ccs are another matter...
