Searched but could not find the answer. Is there an optimum distance between carb and air filter? Can it be too long?

Yes, it can. I have experimented extensively with this even going so far as to build tubes I can adjust for length. The longer the tube the richer it runs. The weird thing is, X amount of length doesn't mean Y fuel mixture. It swaps around some but the average over say a 10" lengthening will be from leaner to richer. Apparently there's compression waves that set up differently at different lengths and don't work as well. At some point, around 10", it started to just run like crap. I think there was just too much turbulence at that point. That was with a tube that was the same inside dimensions as the outside of the carb intake throughout it's length. It makes you wonder if there actually IS some rhyme or reason to that bizarre snorkel tube the Chinese sometimes use. As usual, it's never simple, you'll just have to experiment around. Rich
