Not a good idea...
I wanted to ask you... you have both a bolt and a large flat washer on the shaft?
I can't see how you are having problems if you are using the washer...

Yeah I suspect it will move out hit the case and ruin the needle bearings...
It may have enough room to become disengaged form the idler gear and then you won't have any electric start at all
Is the woodruff key good and tight? You DO have a woodruff key on the shaft?

OK, if you tighten it up and the clutch stops working then there is a problem with the washer, it shouldn't effect the operation of the clutch by tightening that nut...
As I recall it is an aftermarket clutch with 20 bearings?
I would try a second thin washer under the nut and see if you can get it tight without binding...

I think your aftermarket clutch is the problem...it is probably out of spec... Here are the parts... there is NO WAY it should bind when you tighten that nut... Attachments:

Good luck.. I think you have found the problem... the nut should only be pressing on the washer and not on the outside of the SC... I think you may of had the nut on backwards and it was putting pressure on the case...
Please let us know...
