While I was combining 2 50cc scooters to make one good one: The battery that I had was an old one and it would only come up to 11.6 volts when charging. The scooter wouldn't start. The engine would turn over but just wouldn't start. I took the battery out of my wifes car and hooked it to the battery leads on the scooter. Oh yes, it started! Ran for like 3 or 4 minutes and then just died. I was told that I more than likely fried the CDI box. So back to a dealer that's close. Got a new CDI and bought a battery. installed the cdi and followed the instructions on the battery precisely. Once up to a full charge; vroom! Started right up and has been running sweetly since.
MORAL: Never use a car battery to start your scooter. It does get expensive.

Actually you're supposed to be able to do that. The problem people get into is when they use a running car to jump start a scooter. As long as the vehicle isn't running you theoretically can use a truck. Also, if you did have a running car hooked up to your scooter, I don't see how the juice coud get past the DC system, it should pop the fuse or at the worst fry the R/R. To get to the CDI it would have to go through the stator and the igniter coil or trigger coil. I'm not sure what happened to you, I guess anything is possible. Rich

Car batteries are fine to jump a scooter I use one all the time... the electrical components only take what they need. As Rich pointed out.. things start to pop when the car is running...
Once the scooter engine is running the battery is no longer needed and can be disconnected...
Most scooters run from the stator on AC volts... the DC circuit is separate, for the battery charge and lights on some brands
You could have a DC voltage CDI that is charged off the battery side... but I doubt the car battery would effect that. Much more likely a short in the scooter battery...

I use an automotive JumpStart box all the time, while working on scooters.

Ah, I didn't think of a DC CDI Sprocket, good call. Even so, I think the fuse would probably blow first. I've got a DC CDI on my Motorino and the bike is wired so that everything from the battery has to go through the fuse. Rich

Another tip on jumping from a bigger battery. I used to do it this way before I got my battery tender. Battery juice is like water it seeks its own level. To be safe if I had one down and my truck was right there I just connected the two batteries positive to positive and then negative goes to one of the vehicles frame because batteries can explode. Then I went about my business for 10 to 15 minutes since I know the flow of electrons from the charged battery is dusting off the plates in the discharged one. I would then disconnect the jumpers and start the bike. (Yes I have seen a battery explode), and the guy jumping knew what he was doing, owned the garage and was a fantastic wrench. He got acid burns, ruened his clothes and blew little chunks of plastic or whatever all over the place. Battery guy explained it would happen if plates in the battery were internally grounded to each other and you hit it with a lot of juice).

Actually I didn't jump the scooter battery. I removed the scoot battery and the car battery, then connected the car battery directly to the leads of the scoot; and before anyone makes the suggestion, the battery wasn't connected "backwards".

I would try that cdi in the scooter. Perhaps a dc cdi could be dam as ged if you left it running while switching the batterys . John

OK, now I understand, I'm sorry I didn't read your post carefully. Still, you are supposed to be able to put as big a battery in your scooter as you want as long as it is 12v. It will not burn up the starter or the electrical components, they just draw as much as they need. In fact, many folks on the forum have used big batteries on their scoots just for the added security of more capacity. I'm not trying to be argumentative, you're a good guy. I just don't want people getting confused on this if they want to use a big battery. If I'm still not getting what your saying just tell me. Rich
