So it must have oversize piston in it. It would be easy enough to get it to reach around 50mph ;D

Yes, most likely it is running lean, they set them Lean to pass emission tests . And then on a lot of 50s they put a plug over the Fuel Ratio Mixutre screw so people do not mess with it, but that usually causes them to run like crap. I hope it has a carb that the Fuel Ratio Mixture screw is NOT capped, otherwise you will have to drill out the Plug to get at the Fuel Ratio screw behind it.
Take a picture of your Carb BOTH sides to see what kind of setup you have and we can then work on adjusting the Carb. Alleyoop

Well cannot see enough of it HERE is what we are looking for Look at the Fuel Ratio Screw on this 24mm carb yours is just smaller most likely a 18mm. See if you have the Fuel Ratio on yours exposed. Alleyoop This is the LEFT SIDE where the Fuel Ratio Screw is: This is the RIGHT SIDE:

Yep, your Fuel Ratio screw is CAPPED(BUMMER). You will have to drill into the center not to deep maybe just 1/16 to an 1/8 depending if its a CAP or A PLUG. Then just get a small screw and screw it into the hole you drilled just enough so it grabs and pull it off. Some just get the same CARB but with the Fuel Ratio Screw NOT CAPPED. They sell them for aaround $30.00 bucks.
The black boxes and canisters you see are the emission crap the put on them. Many just take them all off because sooner or later they will cause problems with starting and the motor running right. Alleyoop
