clutch :(

went to the gas station to top off. got home and scoot was jerking like the belt was stuck, then it stalled out. took off cvt cover and found little pieces of metal that range from the size of a grain of rice, to the size of a nickel. looked all over and i could not tell where they came from. i started the bike up while it was on the stand, and the grind sound came from the clutch bell. took it off and seen that the metal between each pad is starting to brake. once i cleared the pieces out of the clutch bell, it ran smooth again, but when i hit the rear brake it starts the sound again untill i let off, probably due to pressure on clutch. was just wondering if i change the entire clutch out, must i replace the variator as well? ive noticed on the variator that the plates on the belt side have a ring on them, most likely just wear and tear but its grooved into the metal a little, i can post pics if you like. i just went on a 20 mile ride with the clutch in the condition it is in and it made the trip fine but then i lost a header bolt and started leaking exhaust and backfiring. anyways, off topic, so just wondering about needing a variator as well as a clutch. thanks all

If any of those metal bits got into the variator it could play hell with the ramps and rollers. You might want to pull it apart and inspect it. Those wear rings are normal and don't cause a lot of problems unless they get too deep. You can use some steel wool to clean the variator surfaces and get the belt residue off if they're dark. Good luck, Rich

was about to order new parts for scooter, but my woman got me a new phone, so my part money is spent, would have put a face but the phone is pretty darn nice! 277$ out the door. could have fixed up my scoot with racing parts at that price lol but still, the phone is nice. Sprint ZTE Warp Android 2.3 1 gig processor 2 gigs ram, 2 gigs internal memory, supports 32gig SD. 5mpx camera, all the goodies.

Well you better get a new Clutch, the clutch really takes a beating and creats a lot of heat so if it is ridden like that more pieces are going to break off the clutch arms. Alleyoop

I rebuilt a clutch once and decided to replace the arms with high end ones that had much bigger pads and some kind of exotic metal for the arms. It was supposed to be stronger and lighter. The pads grabbed OK but the ears where the tensioner springs hook through eventually snapped. I also had put a strong main spring in which gave me these obnoxious hole shots when I didn't need them. Soon I was cobbling my old steel clutch together and wondered why I ever messed with it. Bah humbug. Rich

what main spring did you have that gave you the crazy whole shots? was it a 1500 or 2000? i was considering a 1500 but wasnt sure if it would rev too high. maybe stock clutch springs and a 1500 main? idk...

What does the inside of the clutch bell look like? If the bell is good you can get a replacement clutch consisting of just the assembly you took a picture of. If not, you're better off replacing it as a unit, unless you want to upgrade the springs. Although you can buy clutch assemblies with stronger springs if you want, or kits with many different spring sets included.

If you really need a clutch I have a stocker that I removed the springs from. There is plenty of friction material left and in good condition. Just put on your old springs and go............. PM me your address and I will get it off in a flat rate box and you should have it in one day from Palm Coast.
