I bought a scooter for an employee to run errands on. I'm not that familiar with scooters but I have been able to do basic repairs and maintenance with no problems. However, he brought it over tonight saying that it was leaking oil badly. Checked valve cover and it is actually one of the few things not saturated in oil. The whole underside of the seat box was coated in oil, which indicates and upward spray. I noted that there was an opening just past the carb which definitely looked like it should be plugged. I looked up photos of GY6 engines and sure enough it seems like there should be a black plastic cover over this opening. I am embarrassed to say that I don't know what the part is called, so I don't know what to order to fix it. Please see the photo, and thanks in advance.

From how you describe it, it appears to be the Cam Chain Tensioner. Look at it really good and see if it is leaking around the seat or if it is missing the screw in the Center. Alleyoop

Yep that is it. The screw is in there, it is just the cover that is missing from it. So there are the two small circular pieces on the side and in the middle I'm looking right down into the part itself. I found an upper engine shroud for 7 bucks online that seems to have the entire cover piece for it. Let's hope that works.. for some reason it tells me I'm inserting a photo but it doesn't show up [/img] Attachments:

Well it is just a cover it will not stop the oil from coming out IF it is leaking from there. The oil will just go under the plastic cover and show up someplace else. Try and see if the oil is coming from inside the hole OR from around the Tensioner. There should be a Gasket Under the Two screws that hold the Tensioner down as well a CAP or Screw that Actuall screws down into the hold. Looks like someone popped the center off to adjust the tensioner. There is no way anything would just break the center off. Alleyoop Here is a gasket or you can make one yourself just go to the autoparts and get gasket material. www.scooterpartsplace.com/GY6-Cam-Chain-Tensioner-Gasket.aspx If it is leaking from the hole get some RED or Black HIGH TEMP ATV and fill the hole.

Ok so what you are saying is that there should be another piece there. What I see when I look into the hole is a small threaded hole that has what looks like a small set screw down in it. So are you saying there is something that goes into that hole above the little screw but under the cover? I know that nobody popped it off, the guy is scared to even change the oil without me there. I have not been able to confirm that is where the oil is coming from. It is coming out of that hole for sure, but I don't know if it is originating from there. It could be coming from someplace else under the engine shroud but just blowing out that hole. Great.

Yes there is usually a screw type cap that screws in top of the plunger itself which is what you are seeing down in the hole. Are you sure it is NOT the Valve Cover Vent Hose squirting oil all over the place. Also check by the Flywheel and see if you see any oil around there, maybe the Crank seal on that side is leaking and the fan is blowing the oil up throuh the shroud. Also check if it is not the TRANNY hose squirting the tranny oil out. Check the Crankcase bolts for tightness give them a snugeing don't crank on them they will strip just a snugeing you can tell if they are tight or not. Alleyoop

Well I will replace the tensioner then. And the cap. All I know for sure is that the oil isn't coming from around the valve cover itself because that whole area is clean. All of the oil seems to be sprayed all over the underside of the seat box and dripping down. But all of that could be explained by it blowing out of the hole where the tensioner cover is missing. The main problem is when we just crank it and let it idle, no oil seems to be coming out. But driven, it runs out like crazy. Thanks for the advice. I'll check back in.

Yes check the tranny hose and Valve Cover Vent Hose. Anyway I found what should be on the tensioner here is a picture you can see the Gasket and the cap screw on top: Alleyoop
