Amsoil is trying to sell a product but there's good stuff in that article and on that site in general. They have a good article on gear oil vs engine oil and surprisingly viscosity isn't that much different, just the numbers:
You can see on the chart that 30W engine oil corresponds to 85W gear oil. I ran into this because my two CF Motos recommend 10W-30 engine oil in the transmission. I was never comfortable with this so I researched it. Although the viscosities are very similar there's many properties of gear oil, such as shear resistance, that make it appropriate for a transmission. I decided to eschew the manual and go with the gear oil. Rich
