has anyone tried to resurface or sand a cylinder head? the shop manual for MC54b (yamaha manual) says to use 400 X 600 wet sand paper on a plate (must mean flat surface) and rotate head in a figure 8 pattern. how do you get an exact flat surface? and why can't a guy re-use the metal gasket? what is so special about a new three-ply metal gasket. seems you could clean up the old one and put copper high heat gasket maker on it? NO? just a thought... thanks

You can resurface as the manual says if you're careful. The gaskets theoretically stretch and conform as you torque them. Therefore they are stretched and ruined for another application. Having said that, there's been several guys on the forum that have put some dressing on an old gaket and reused it again no problem. If it was a Masserati with 13:1 compresision I'd be a little more loathe to try it. Rich

ok, thank you for the response and the lesson on head gaskets. I am going to try and dress up the old one as i have nothing to loose. I already installed a new used engine in scoot. Going to try and learn as i go in fixing the old one, then use as a back up if need be. Thanks again for this form,, it is truly a blessing of a resource....

I have resurfaced a couple of heads. The trick is to use a totally flat surface. I have a 12"x12"x2" piece of granite that is flat to within .001". Some people use glass but it must be on a flat surface also. Use 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Use a little water, set the part on the sandpaper and slowly move in a figure eight pattern Do not apply pressure to the part. Aluminum is fairly soft and will sand easy. Just be patient, go slow and be careful. Head gaskets can be reused if dressed with copper gasket seal. I don't recommend it. The gasket is already squished and distorted. You may have to torque the head studs a little tighter to get it to seal, but not likely. Disclaimer: The use of used parts will void warranty and we cannot be reasonable for damage, injury, or disappointment
