Working on my 250B. After 2 hrs of cranking, can't match both marks exactly. Which is more critical to be closer to the mark? The one by the timing chain or the one by the oil fill? Also, does it matter which direction the timing wheel is rotated? My knees is are giving out after so many squats. ASAP help would be much appreciated, I am working in the outdoors.
Thanks

That is your problem you do not CRANK it YOU HAVE TO turn it over by hand to align the CAM SPROCKET and get the piston up to Top Dead Center. So get a SOCKET wrench that will fit the FLYWHEEL NUT and turn it CLOCKWISE until the Piston is TOP DEAD CENTER and the Cam Sprocket is lined up and the Rockers are OFF the HIGH LOBES on Cam.
At that point the Timeing marks should be CLOSE to the "T" mark it usually is pointing to the Line before the "T" or a little INSIDE the arrow and the 1 Line before the "T" At this point you should be able to Grab the Rockers and wiggle them just a little. Now you can go ahead and adjust them. Alleyoop

Thank you for a quick response. OK, I did hand turn, not cranked by the starter. When I get the mark lined up at the cam sprocket, the other over shoots. How many more time have turn to get all marks aligned?
Thanks again

Don't worry about the other MARKS, what marks are you saying OVERSHOOTS? The timeing mark can be pointing anywhere NEAR the "T" AND "F" MARK IF there are even marks like that some just have lines or one line some do not even have letter marks some have numbers. So do not worry about what Mark or Marks it is overshooting.
Take a picture of whatever marks are on the Flywheel or whatever you say is being overshot.
So just bring it around to where the CAM lines up with the TWO LITTLE HOLES EVEN WITH THE TOP OF THE HEAD and the BIG HOLE INBETWEEN STRAIGHT UP and STOP IT THERE. Alleyoop

The "other" mark that overshoots is the "V"mark by the oil fill. When it is ON the mark, the flywheel is not matched up yet. So when I line up the flywheel, the "V" overshoots an disappears. Am I making any sense ?
Thanks again
P.S. My knees are really taking a beating

Don't worry about the MARK on the FLYWHEEL, just get the piston to top dead center and the Cam aligned so you can adjust the valves. Does you cam Sprocket look like this IF SO just align it like in the picture and DON'T WORRY about the "V" MARK. Alleyoop

The one by the timing chain is more important. Also, always rotate the engine so the variator moves counterclockwise and the stator moves clockwise. Don't get too obsessive about the timing marks, they just get the cam lobes off the valves to release them. Like Alley says, if you can wiggle the rocker you're good. There's room for error on releasing the tension on the valves. Try this PDF, it should help. Rich
