Just got my brand new Tao Tao atm50a1. Was looking at getting an upgrade for the variator. Should i just change weights or buy a whole new "racing" assembly. My goal is more top speed.

If your variator inner pulley is making it all the way out to the outer pulley at WOT then weights won't change your top end. Put magic marker on the pulley and see how far the belt comes up on the pulley, that will tell you a lot about what it's doing. Alley knows a lot more about this procedure than I do. If the pulley is not coming all the way out then weights would be an inexpensive way to increase your top end.
I never owned a 50cc but from what I understand some of them have a washer that keeps the pulley from moving all the way out. When you take the variator apart see if you have one. Rich

I would break the the scooter in before you start messing with it...you could have a variator washer restriction or a rev limited CDI..but changing both or either will only get you 5 mph on a broken in 50cc at the most...

Like Rich said mark your variator so you know how far the belt is climbing up the Variator: Use a marker or whatever and mark it like this: Alleyoop
